Wireless E9-1-1 Picks Up Speed With TimesTen

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 5, 2001--TimesTen Performance Software today announced that TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS)(Nasdaq:TSYS), a key architect of wireless messaging and location software, has implemented TimesTen's real-time data management software in its Xypoint(R) Location Platform to speed data management of wireless E9-1-1 calls. The Xypoint Location Platform determines the location of the caller and routes the call and location to the nearest public safety answering point. TCS currently provides wireless E9-1-1 location service for millions of wireless subscribers nationwide.

The TimesTen(R) in-memory database is the source for life-saving customer location information. When an E9-1-1 call arrives, TimesTen's real-time performance is counted on to log the call, locate the answering point, and replicate the information between two redundant service centers -- all in less than one second. TimesTen was chosen to replace an existing data management solution because it eliminated key performance bottlenecks both in application response time and replication latency. In addition, TimesTen's efficient, memory-optimized design allowed the application to be implemented on more economical hardware platforms, and, in the event of a system failure, enabled recovery to be completed much more quickly.

TCS is one of the largest providers of wireless location services in the nation, supporting more than 20 wireless carriers. TCS provides Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) with cell site location, 10-digit callback number, name of the wireless carrier, and community or neighborhood of call origination -- data critical to finding callers in distress. TCS' infrastructure consists of two fully redundant sites that handle millions of wireless E9-1-1 calls per year.

Once a call is placed, subscriber information must be provided within stringent time requirements based on industry standards. The time-sensitive nature of the data is an excellent fit for TimesTen, which acts as a circular queue, keeping the most current data active at both sites, to ensure high availability and accuracy of the information.

"The ability to call for help in an emergency is one of the primary reasons people cite for having a wireless phone," commented Larry Corvari, vice president of engineering at TCS. "The data management component of our system has to be extremely fast in response, in replication, and in recovery time. TimesTen not only surpassed our requirements, it allowed us to do so on economical hardware. We looked at other commercial alternatives and TimesTen was clearly the best fit."

"Enhanced services, like TCS', are the key to revenue growth in the wireless sector," said James R. Groff, CEO of TimesTen Performance Software. "TCS' wireless E9-1-1 service is an ideal application for TimesTen. When you're dealing with lives, nothing is more time critical."
