Annapolis Junction, Md. and Bainbridge Island, Wash. – (November 5, 2001) – Link Communications and Airbiquity are launching Link’s Vehicle Data Distribution System (VDDS) Series 300aq Wireless Router, featuring Airbiquity’s aqLink software, to deliver instant, reliable, voice-and-data services across TDMA, CDMA and AMPS wireless networks. Developed for Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) and asset tracking applications, the VDDS300aq offers the ubiquity and simplicity of implementing a “virtual data channel” across all supported wireless carriers without the latency of existing out-of-band solutions, such as short message service (SMS).

The VDDS 300aq features:

  • TDMA/AMPS or CDMA/AMPS versions, compatible with Ericsson-brand wireless phones, which are available through a variety of nationwide wireless carrier rate plans
  • 3 external RS-232 ports
  • 4 discrete inputs and 3 outputs
  • Industry-leading, 12 channel, WAAS capable SiRF Technology SiRFStar II Global Positioning System (GPS) module
  • Airbiquity’s aqLink wireless software, to transport discrete data during the course of a voice conversation to telematics service providers, application service providers, or wireless carriers.
  • Optional handset and CAN interface to the automobile

“The VDDS 300aq integrates voice, discrete data, and nearly universal wireless coverage onto one mobile platform,” noted John Mirabile, president of Link Communications. “We see this family of products making substantial in-roads into the after-market telematics space, as the connectivity needs of commercial vehicles and the automobile can be met with one unified mobile device.”

“Airbiquity’s aqLink technology is a keystone feature of the Link Communications’ VDDS 300aq,” said Dan Allen, president and CEO of Airbiquity. “We will work with Link and many of our technology partners to develop quality service offerings that will take maximum advantage of the features of the VDDS 300aq.”

Link Communication offers a family of open, modular, feature-rich, and low-cost architectures that can be configured to meet a variety of demanding performance requirements for automobiles, commercial vehicles, heavy trucks, locomotives, and containers. Link is also leveraging its substantial capabilities and technology for after-market telematics, an industry sector that the Strategis Group expects to grow from $200 million in 2000 to over $2.8 billion in 2004.

Airbiquity’s aq-enabled line of products, such as the GPS Accessory and aqServer, and its OEM technology, such as Texas Instruments and Agere Systems Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), feature the company’s patented aqLink software to deliver narrowband data over any digital or analog wireless voice network during the course of a voice conversation. The high-value data, including location, vehicle operating status, automated crash notification, and telemetry, can be delivered across all existing wireless networks with no modifications to the wireless carrier infrastructure.

For distributors and value-added resellers (VARs), the TDMA/AMPS version of the VDDS 300aq wireless router starts at less than $600, and is available for immediate product demonstration and quantity ordering.
