CommWorks Announces Availability of 3G Wireless Products Compatible With Wireless Systems From Lucent Technologies
URL(s): www.3com.com
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill.--Dec. 3, 2001--
Service Providers Now Have a Ready-made Option to Offer "Always On"
Mobile Internet Connections
CommWorks, a leader in wireless data networking technology, today achieved another milestone in the rollout of third-generation (3G)
wireless networks with the announcement of commercial availability of standards-based products that operate with Lucent Technologies' 3G
packet data products. Deploying these compatible 3G wireless network products enables mobile operators to provide "always on" mobile
Internet connections to mobile devices.
Interoperable products from CommWorks and Lucent, such as CommWorks' Total Control(R) 1000 Packet Data Serving Node and
Lucent's Flexent(TM) CDMA base stations, comply with the CDMA2000 standard established by the International Telecommunications Union.
This standard is the next phase in the evolution of cdmaOne digital cellular and Personal Communications Services (PCS) networks, which today
are used by more than 96 million wireless users around the world, according to the CDMA Development Group.
A key advantage of CDMA2000 technology is its compatibility with existing wireless networks, as well as with technologies being developed.
This compatibility enables wireless operators to use existing spectrum to deliver 3G mobile Internet Protocol (IP) packet data services to
subscribers. With peak data rates of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps) available to wireless subscribers in a mobile environment, this increase
in speed promises to open the door to a new generation of mobile applications. The higher speed networks allow service providers to evolve
wireless data offerings from today's text-only format to advanced content and applications, rich with graphics, color and multi-media features.
Wireless operators also benefit from the increased voice capacity and extended battery life of subscriber units made possible by CDMA2000
networks.
CommWorks offers key packet data technologies for CDMA2000 mobile networks, including quick, authenticated Internet access using
simple IP services; and fast, secure access to home or private networks using mobile IP services. These technologies create the necessary data
conduit for mobile operators delivering enhanced revenue-generating applications.
