The Strategis Group Predicts One Third of Global Population Will Have a Wireless Device by 2008

WASHINGTON, Dec 20, 2001 - The Strategis Group today announced an upcoming report that examines market and distribution trends for next-generation wireless devices, forecasting market growth by technology through 2008.

Next year, more than 483 million units will be sold to end-users globally, and one third of the world's population will own a wireless device by 2008. The Strategis Group's report, "Global Wireless Devices," includes comparative analysis of next-generation equipment and detailed forecasts of handset data.

"Global Wireless Devices" also reveals that "the handset industry is following a growth path that can be compared to the PC industry a decade ago. Many handset manufacturers are outsourcing design and manufacturing, and they are gaining scale and cost efficiencies while focusing on core competencies," notes Ed Wallace, an industry veteran, contributing to this report.

As a new generation of technology drives demand for handset replacements, the market for replacement rates is projected to reach 36% in 2002. Handset sales overall will be up 17% globally, and markets in China and Southeast Asia will grow by nearly 40%.

"We're projecting that handset replacement rates will rebound dramatically in 2002, fueled by end-users who are increasingly ready to migrate to next-generation devices," said Ozgur Aytar, a wireless market analyst with The Strategis Group. "Next-generation services, such as multimedia messaging (MMS), will drive this consumer demand at least into 2003. MMS will be the next-generation `chat-room' that will help fuel demand for advanced handsets. Short messaging services (SMS) and i-mode have only wetted the appetite of consumers for the capability that MMS can deliver."

"Global Wireless Devices" provides valuable insight on key wireless device characteristics while offering market predictions for the next seven years. Key technologies, product categories, form factors, pricing, features, market trends and vendor strategies are discussed. The report includes statistics on wireless subscribers, handset unit sales and handset sales value by region.
