AirFlash Delivers First Location-Based Interactive SMS Service

URL(s): AirFlash

SARATOGA, Calif. & LONDON--Feb. 7, 2001-- AirFlash, Inc. today announced the first location-based interactive communications service available to the mobile industry that utilizes Short Message Service (SMS), the most popular form of digital mobile messaging worldwide, and a source of high-profit margins for mobile carriers. SmartSMS is a two-way service that integrates AirFlash's location-based applications with conventional SMS text messaging systems. This allows existing mobile users to query and access location-relevant information, such as yellow pages, driving and walking directions and "mobile notes," from any GSM-compliant phone or pager.

SMS usage has experienced dramatic recent growth worldwide, according to market analysts, with an estimated 20 billion mobile text messages sent in December 2000 alone. Ovum, a research and consulting firm based in London, recently predicted worldwide revenues from text messaging and simple information services -- SMS and basic WAP services -- will grow from $13 billion at the end of 2000 to almost $47 billion by the end of 2004(1).

"Interactive SMS-based services, particularly those that optimize location-based technology, are well placed to exploit the burgeoning pent-up demand for mobile-oriented messaging on a global basis," said Robin Hearn, senior analyst for Ovum in the U.S.

AirFlash, through its SmartZone development platform, allows carriers to create and deliver location services through the leading standards of WAP, web and now SMS. With SmartSMS, one of a family of software solutions from AirFlash, carriers have seamless scalability for rapid user adoption as well as integration of their existing SMS and AirFlash applications. SmartSMS also includes a HELP menu with simple key words to familiarize users with SMS commands.

"AirFlash has created an SMS-based technology that offers carriers a feature-rich service plugged into what has been considered a feature-less environment," said Rama Aysola, founder and CEO of AirFlash. "By delivering the industry's first two-way SMS location-based services, our customers get compelling applications for mobile data services that represent immediate revenue opportunities."
