Trolltech and LISA Systems Provide First Linux Handheld with Web Access to Launch Embedded Linux Partnership
URL(s): Trolltech
Hannover, Germany - March 12, 2001 - In a development that brings the
hottest new embedded operating system to the German market, Trolltech
and LISA Systems today announced a comprehensive Linux solution for the
Compaq iPAQ palmtop computer, which will be demonstrated at CeBIT, the
world's largest computer expo, located in Hanover, Germany.
The Linux-enabled iPAQ will represent the first project in a partnership
that teams LISA System's mLinux, embedded Linux with Trolltech's
Qt/Embedded and Qt Palmtop Environment.
The solution includes: the Compaq iPAQ; Trolltech's Qt/Embedded GUI
application framework and windowing system; Trolltech's Qt Palmtop
Environment, which includes personal information management software, as
well as games and a powerful MPEG player; custom components from LISA
Systems which include mLinux embedded Linux with power management,
Internet access, and a popular open-source web browser and file manager
based on the KDE desktop environment.
"There is no need for any operating system that is restricted to PDAs or
handhelds. Linux unifies professional electronic data processing from
server to handhelds", said Robin Jacobitz, Managing director of LISA
systems. "Linux’s adaptability allows for specific, slim, business
solutions resulting in better performance and efficiency. Our
Linux-iPAQ's power management is already ahead of Windows CE. And
regarding a mobile device with web-access, which OS gives you more in
terms of price, performance and security features? "
LISA Systems is adding several key elements: Power Management for Linux
kernel, browser that includes css-, ssl- and java-script functionality,
scripts for telephony, web-access with Nokia cardphone via GSM and HSCSD
or via gprs-cellphone with serial cord, a dialer to conveniently work
the phone, compressed JFFS that allows to use the flash-rom like a ram
and a multi-user log-in.
LISA Systems will be creating the Linux-based iPAQs for the German
market. LISA Systems delivers the mLinux distribution pre-installed on
the iPAQ or on CD-ROM. The solution will be based on open source
software, which means that because Trolltech's Qt is the basis of the
KDE desktop environment, thousands of KDE-based Linux applications will
be available for porting to the LISA Systems solution.
"We have over a hundred thousand developers out there working with Qt,
supplemented by a University program that's educating 10,000 additional
developers every year," says Haavard Nord, Trolltech's CEO. "Developers
creating Qt-based desktop applications can move them to the embedded
market simply and efficiently—a huge advantage for LISA Systems and
their Linux-based iPAQ."
The demonstration of the LISA Systems Linux-based iPAQ will be
demonstrated in Trolltech’s booth (Hall 003, Stand C57) at CeBIT, from
March 21 to March 28, 2001.
