Xmarc, Inc. and Airbiquity Partner to Provide Location-based Services
LAS VEGAS, March 20, 2001--
Real-time demonstration at CTIA Wireless (booth No. 8841) will highlight the complete
LBS solution while maintaining enhanced user privacy protections
Xmarc, Inc. (ASX:FHL) and Airbiquity, a location technology company, are entering a
strategic alliance to incorporate Xmarc's WIISE 2.0 location-based services (LBS)
platform with Airbiquity's aqServer(TM), a wireless communications solution that
enables the integration of voice and data to support location-based services.
Airbiquity and Xmarc will integrate their respective location-based services platforms
to deliver a more comprehensive LBS solution to wireless network operators, portals and
m-businesses. The aqServer works with Airbiquity's aqLink(TM) technology to quickly
and accurately transport location-based information through the voice channel. The
aqServer receives the information from any aqLink-enabled mobile device, such as
Airbiquity's GPS Accessory, and rapidly determines the caller's location, while Xmarc's
WIISE platform enables the advanced mapping, routing and proximity searches needed to
deliver complete LBS solutions.
A real-time application of this will take place at the Airbiquity booth (No. 8841) at
CTIA and will follow a vehicle on a three-day drive from Seattle to Las Vegas. The
location positions will be obtained from Airbiquity's aqServer, then geo-located,
managed, and stored by the Xmarc WIISE platform. The stored location information will
be used to generate alternate routes, point-of-interest searches and advanced routing
displays.
By integrating Xmarc's WIISE 2.0 platform, Airbiquity customers will benefit from
WIISE 2.0's Secure Profiler feature that offers data privacy protection for users and their
profiles. It allows users to set up secure groups, manage group members and provide user
access to group location information. Security is maintained with strong authentication
techniques.
"Xmarc and Airbiquity share a similar goal to offer turn-key location-based services
that afford the highest level of user privacy," said Dan Allen, president and chief
executive officer of Airbiquity. "The GPS Accessory features our Push-to-Pinpoint(TM)
technology, which allows users to enable or disable the location technology at the touch
of a button, and Xmarc's WIISE 2.0 allows users to set up and manage secure groups."
"Working together with Airbiquity on this innovative technology is very exciting,
because it demonstrates a commitment by both companies to deliver real solutions to
critical human problems," said Steve Lytle, Xmarc's vice president of sales for the
Americas. "For example--a distressed driver whose car has broken down on a deserted
road. That person would simply push a button for roadside assistance services to pinpoint
his or her exact location. The button allows users to 'opt-in' for location technology,
protecting their privacy from potential Big-Brother abuses."
The implications for the integration of the aqServer and WIISE extend to wireless
carriers, roadside assistance organizations, call centers, logistics markets, and
transportation companies. Airbiquity and Xmarc will jointly market the solution to their
existing customers and to customers in vertical markets.
