CUPERTINO, Calif., March 27, 2001--
Safeguards PC and Palm OS-Compatible Devices from Malicious Code, Protects Important Files from Accidental Deletion,
Completely Erases Confidential Data from Hard Drive
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC) today announced Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition, the newest release of the
world's leading anti-virus software. Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition addresses the most critical needs of small
businesses by providing continuous protection against viruses and other malicious code and ensuring the integrity and safety of
their data. Professional Edition scans and detects viruses in Palm OS-compatible devices, restores accidentally deleted files,
and completely cleans hard drives of any traces of viruses.
"With this new version of Norton AntiVirus, small business owners and power users have the most effective tools for
maintaining the uninterrupted health and safety of their PCs and handheld devices and the important business information they
contain," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec's Consumer Products Division. "By providing proactive
protection against potential problems, Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition makes it easier and more convenient than
ever before to enjoy hassle-free computing."
To address the rapid increase in handheld and wireless devices, which signals a parallel increase in potential risk for new
security threats, Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition includes Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS. Symantec
AntiVirus for Palm OS, the only Palm anti-virus solution that resides on the handheld device itself, scans for and detects viruses
in Palm OS-compatible handheld devices, ensuring maximum security for data at all times -- even between synchronizations.
Additionally, Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition features data recovery capabilities to help restore important files
that were deleted accidentally by a user or by a new virus. Users can also apply the data cleaning component of Norton
AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition to ensure that sensitive information previously deleted no longer remains on a hard drive.
This data cleaning component conforms to the method specified by the Department of Defense to wipe file data contents for
ultimate security.
To enable small businesses and power users to enjoy the most up-to-date protection against malicious code, Norton
AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition includes Symantec's highly regarded LiveUpdate technology. Automatic LiveUpdate
checks for new virus definitions whenever the user is online, thereby obviating the need for manual updates. Norton AntiVirus
then downloads the latest definitions in the background -- using microdefinitions for faster downloads -- without interrupting
other work. For further ease-of-use, Palm OS users automatically update their virus definitions each time they use HotSync.
Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition is available now for an estimated retail price of US$59.95. Current users of
Norton AntiVirus may purchase Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition for US$39.95 after a $20 mail-in rebate.
Customers can purchase Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition from various retail locations, Symantec's online store at
www.SymantecStore.com, as well as other online retailers.
