LOBBY7 Expands Mobile Technology Solutions to Include Integrated Speech/Graphics Interface Engine

BOSTON, April 2, 2001-- Demo with SpeechWorks Declared the "Coolest Technology" at the CTIA Wireless Conference

Wireless innovation firm LOBBY7 today announced that it has expanded its mobile technology solutions portfolio to include a new integrated speech/graphics interface engine that will enable users to interact with wireless applications and navigate using simultaneous voice and visual controls. Through its patent-pending technology, the new software-based system will facilitate the design and deployment of mobile offerings with "multi-modal" user interfaces - ones that allow users to talk to their devices, ask questions, make requests, and receive a real-time, graphical response right on their screen.

"Leveraging sophisticated session and call management software, LOBBY7 has recognized that the best way to request information is by voice, but the best way to receive it is graphically. LOBBY7 delivers an integrated graphical UI and voice portal that can be accessed via WAP phones or connected PDAs or PocketPC allowing users to request graphical content using their human voice. The ability to recognize the user as a person rather than a device, and to follow the session logic is critical - and very difficult to do," stated John H. Hill, communication software analyst for Salomon Smith Barney, in a research report published following the CTIA Global Wireless 2001 conference. "By far the coolest technology we saw at the conference was the mutli-modal voice/data offering of LOBBY7." LOBBY7 demonstrated the interface engine in SpeechWorks' booth at CTIA.

Solving existing wireless device constraints, the integrated speech/graphics interface engine will allow users to interact with applications on mobile handheld devices using a unified two-way speech and visual input interface and visualize information in real-time, through simultaneous speech, audio (static or live) and graphical formats. The interface not only integrates easily with all major speech recognition and text-to-speech systems, but also utilizes an architecture (J2EE and XML-based) that is inherently scalable to accommodate disparate content sources and users. While targeted at consumer as well as enterprise functions, the interface is built on SpeechWorks International's (NASDAQ: SPWX) speech recognition and text-to-speech software and enjoys full VoiceXML compliance. "SpeechWorks is excited to be working with LOBBY7 as we help build their next-generation, multi-modal interface engine and we look forward to an innovative and successful partnership," said Mike Phillips, CTO of SpeechWorks.

Among the possible consumer-focused, wireless offerings to be enabled by LOBBY7's technology are theme park mobile guides, in-store mobile shopping portals and multimedia applications for sports arenas. In a theme park environment, for example, consumers will be able to carry a mobile device with a broadband local area network connection. They will use voice commands to access location-based, multimedia information, including videos, animations and music clips, for all attractions, restaurants and shops, as well as communicate with friends and family members in other areas of the park

The integrated speech/graphics interface engine is the latest addition to LOBBY7's set of patent-pending enabling technologies and user interface design methodologies, which empower its mobile solutions. Together, these form an expansive server/device toolkit that allows LOBBY7 to collaboratively innovate new wireless offerings with market-leading organizations, both customers and channel partners such as SpeechWorks. LOBBY7's innovative offerings include:

  • Advanced session management
  • Intelligent personalization
  • Real-time content streaming (text and audio)
  • Multi-modal (speech/graphics) application access
  • Animated graphics delivery

LOBBY7 enables businesses to capitalize on the mobile Internet by creating innovative, wireless software and solutions. LOBBY7's offerings create a powerful mobile experience across a wide range of wireless devices, with specific focus on core technologies such as software agents and a personalization platform that will drive the m-revolution. LOBBY7 harnesses its core Intellectual Property, end-user insights and wireless technology expertise to create innovative offerings for mobile professionals and customers.

LOBBY7 has developed robust user interface design methodologies and a unique set of enabling technologies that empower its mobile solutions. Tapping into text-to-speech and voice recognition software leaders as well as legacy system integration specialists, these enabling technologies are patent-pending, reusable application components that address specific issues and solve complex problems in wireless technology. They include engines for advanced session management, intelligent personalization, content streaming, multi-modal speech/graphics application access, and animated graphics delivery, among others.
