MICROSOFT DEMONSTRATES BLUE802(TM) TECHNOLOGY FROM INTERSIL AND SILICON WAVE
World's First Dual-Mode Bluetooth(TM) and 802.11b Wireless Technology
Solution Delivers Simultaneous Operation of Both Technologies in One Device
San Diego and Irvine, Calif. - April 22, 2002 - Intersil Corporation
(NASDAQ: ISIL), the world's leading supplier of silicon for Wireless Local
Area Networks, and Silicon Wave, Inc., a world leading supplier of silicon
for Wireless Personal Area Networks, today announced their new Blue802(TM)
technology that Microsoft officials demonstrated at WinHEC 2002 last week.
Intersil and Silicon Wave have jointly developed the Blue802 technology that
enables customers to fully integrate both Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) and Bluetooth
wireless technologies on a single platform. Implemented in the world's first
dual mode chip set solution available to the market, the highly integrated
Blue802 solution can be embedded into products such as notebook PCs,
portable devices and access points to provide simultaneous operation of
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless functionality with optimal throughput and
without interference. Using this technology, customers are expected to
begin shipping mini-PCI cards for notebook PCs in volume in the third
quarter this year.
"As businesses and consumers further recognize the tremendous benefits of
wireless connectivity, users want the ability to perform an array of
applications that utilize both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth automatically," said
Jawad Khaki, vice president of Microsoft's Windows Networking and
Communications. "We're committed to providing support for these
technologies in our product portfolio and are pleased to see the progress
Intersil and Silicon Wave have made in integrating these complementary
technologies."
"Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are complementary wireless technologies that will
collectively eliminate wires and cables from the computing experience," said
Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of Intersil's Wireless
Networking business. "We're confident that our work with Silicon Wave
delivers the promise of a truly wireless environment by untethering
applications neither technology could achieve alone. We're thrilled to see
the enthusiasm for this technology by an industry leader like Microsoft."
"Combining the proven competencies of Silicon Wave and Intersil, two
industry-leading silicon developers, has created the world's first practical
solution integrating two of the most popular wireless technologies today,"
said David Lyon, CEO of Silicon Wave. "Blue802 technology demonstrates the
innovation both companies have brought to this successful implementation
enabling coexistence of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies."
About Blue802 Technology
Silicon Wave and Intersil have developed Blue802 technology, a unique
collaborative real-time communications interface at the MAC layer that is
transparent to the notebook PC or portable device user. Data can be
transmitted without interference while optimizing system throughput, range,
and responsiveness. This enables Bluetooth applications such as mouse,
keyboard, printing, file transfer and portable device synch to run at the
same time the user is connected to the network over Wi-Fi. For more
information about the Blue802 technology visit Intersil and Silicon Wave at
Networld + Interop on May 7-9, 2002 in the Wi-Fi Pavilion, Booth #343.
