M-Systems Enables Mobile Applications for Symbian OS with Mobile DiskOnChip
LONDON--April 23, 2002--
Software Driver for Mobile DiskOnChip Now Available for the Symbian Operating System Supporting Advanced Graphics, Audio and Video Capabilities
M-Systems (Nasdaq:FLSH), a leader in flash disk data storage products, today announced that a software driver to support M-Systems' Mobile DiskOnChip(R) for Symbian OS is now available.
The driver enables the advanced applications found on mobile devices such as multimedia, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation viewing, Web surfing, gaming, e-mail communications and sophisticated contact management without sacrificing battery life or performance for end users.
M-Systems has also recently become a Symbian Platinum Partner to offer Symbian OS licensees quick development and time-to-market featuring Mobile DiskOnChip, a high-capacity local storage solution, coupled with one of the industry's leading OSs for mobile phones.
"Symbian OS is enabling an enhanced end-user experience through media-rich applications and smooth integration of technologies and features.
"We are very happy to see M-Systems' revolutionary technology now available for Symbian licensees to use in their Symbian OS phones, extending the capabilities of these devices with solutions provided by manufacturers, software developers and network operators," said Gilles Allain, vice president, account management and partnerships, Symbian.
"Symbian welcomes M-Systems to the Symbian Platinum Partner program, demonstrating increasing commitment by the industry to Symbian OS as the standard operating system for data-enabled mobile phones."
"Our partnership with Symbian is a major step in enabling mobile devices to deliver all of the exciting and electrifying applications that mobile users want to use," said Efrat Ramati, M-Systems' director of Mobile DiskOnChip.
"With the high capacity and high performance of Mobile DiskOnChip now enabled within Symbian OS, multimedia partners such as RealNetworks, PacketVideo, Macromedia and Beatnik will now be able to more easily incorporate advanced graphics, audio and video capabilities into mobile devices."
Mobile DiskOnChip Technology
Since its introduction in October 2001, Mobile DiskOnChip, the world's smallest single-chip flash disk, has gained interest and acceptance within the industry. Less than half the size and delivering 10 times the performance of competing flash products, Mobile DiskOnChip combines high capacity with high performance to enable high-end mobile phone applications.
Mobile DiskOnChip is M-Systems' first 1.8V DiskOnChip flash disk. With exceptional reliability, read and write performance and high capacity, it brings the benefits of high-density and minimal form factor to mobile designers.
Mobile DiskOnChip is manufactured with state-of-the-art 0.16 micron technology, offering up to 64 megabytes (cascadable up to 256MB) of NAND-based flash memory in a minimal 9x12mm space. Mobile DiskOnChip maximizes battery usage with its low power consumption.
M-Systems' patented TrueFFS(R) driver, supporting all DiskOnChip products, was ported to leading operating systems for quick and easy integration. DiskOnChip is designed to provide fully accurate data storage throughout the lifetime of the handset. It achieves this by combining industry-standard Reed-Solomon error detection and correction code with M-Systems' TrueFFS technology.
Data integrity becomes increasingly critical as high-end mobile devices store more data locally. DiskOnChip guarantees data integrity even if the battery drains or is physically removed. Users can rely on the accuracy of stored data.
Like all M-Systems flash disk products, members of the DiskOnChip family fully emulate a hard disk. Read/write operations are identical to these operations on a conventional hard disk, both from the perspective of standard and customized operating systems.
Additionally, all Mobile DiskOnChip family products are also designed with a built-in Programmable Boot Block, which can store code to replace a separate boot device.
