ORLANDO, Fla., May 14 -- WAVE 2002 -- Cingular Wireless today introduced its first offering of Data Connect service, a wireless Internet service package that allows users to access corporate information, browse the Web, manage e-mail and more from laptops and PDAs. Cingular is previewing the exciting new product, which is expected to become commercially available in June, through demonstrations today and tomorrow at its WAVE 2002 conference being held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando.

Data Connect gives customers the ability to wirelessly access their corporate Intranet, share files, send and receive emails, access Cingular's "My Wireless Window" portal, or the Internet with the same freedom as on a PC. Data Connect is an extension of Cingular's Wireless Internet and Wireless

Internet Express services.

The software-based Data Connect solution allows customers to use their Cingular mobile phone as a wireless modem for their laptop or PDA. With Data Connect, Cingular Wireless acts as the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and intends to expand corporate content, offer business applications, and enable businesses to customize the My Wireless Window portal.

The solution, which uses mobile data connectivity software from Smith Micro Software, Inc., (Nasdaq: SMSI) works over Cingular's GPRS, GSM and TDMA networks. Smith Micro Software is an Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the wireless market.

"Data Connect adds greater choice and flexibility to our wireless Internet offerings," said Tim Hogan, Executive Director, Business Marketing, for Cingular Wireless. "In line with market trends, Cingular is providing wireless Internet access solutions to satisfy a variety of customer preferences on a variety of platforms. Customers now have the ability to access specific, short bursts of Web-based information via their mobile phones, or through Data Connect, have such desktop capabilities as corporate Intranet access or Web browsing on a larger screen device."

According to IDC the number of business wireless Internet users will grow from 2.6 million in 2000 to more than 49 million in 2005. Customers will have two Data Connect kits from which to choose. One, which includes easy-to-install CD software only, is priced at $19.99. The other, which comes with the software as well as either a serial or USB connection, is $49.99. They will be sold in Cingular retail stores and distributed through Cingular's direct Sales force to support Cingular's enterprise customer base, which includes nearly half of the Fortune 1000 companies.

Features include:

* Support for Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP Home, and XP Pro;

* Support for Palm and Pocket PC;

* Easy-to-use configuration wizard;

*Digital dashboard to monitor usage and connection, and manage dial-up account;

*Optional filtering for Web graphics to optimize page downloads speed;

*Support for both USB and serial connections, and for infrared IrDA;

*3-foot cable length for notebook, 1.5-foot cable for the PDA; and

*Support for downloadable software upgrades.

Later this year, Cingular will enhance Data Connect with such features as data compression, PC Card support, virtual private network (VPN) solutions and Bluetooth solutions. Cingular also plans to enable Data Connect for business use in conjunction with Cingular's third-generation wireless technology, called EDGE, which will be deployed beginning in 2003.

Data Connect is the latest addition to Cingular's industry-leading suite of wireless data solutions for businesses enabled for both mobile phones and data-only devices. These include the Cingular Xpress Mail(SM) family of corporate e-mail access services, interactive messaging and solutions in the areas of customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, help desks, and sales and field force automation.
