First GSM order in Central America: Siemens to supply mobile technology to Belize Telecommunications Ltd (BTL)
order worth EUR 14 million
Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) has
been selected by the operator Belize Telecommunications
Limited (BTL), the country's Telecommunication Service
Provider, as the sole supplier for one of the first GSM
networks in Central America. The order is worth around EUR
14 million. Siemens in the Netherlands, Siemens Nederland
N.V., will supply and install all the radio and switching
technology for setting up a national GSM/GPRS mobile radio
network in Belize in spring 2002. The network is due to go
into operation in mid 2002.
Siemens' delivery to BTL comprises a complete GSM/GPRS
mobile radio network that includes the core switching
system, remote radio stations, VoiceMail system, SMS system,
Prepaid platform, call detail recording system, and
operating and maintenance centers. The network supports the
1900-MHz GSM frequency and is initially designed for 25,000
mobile users and is easily expandable to meet the expected
growth and migration of BTL's customer base.
Over a period of time, BTL is replacing its present AMPS
(Advanced Mobile Phone System) mobile radio network with a
digital GSM/GPRS network. This makes BTL one of the first
Central American carriers to migrate to GSM and to use the
GPR technology. This is another success in Latin America for
Siemens, which already set up GSM networks in the Dutch
Antilles and in Surinam, and is also acting as a main
supplier in setting up a GSM network for the Brazilian
carrier Telemar.
"GSM is a global success - and for us the Belize order is
another strategically important step in the Latin American
market," said Dr. Valentin Chapero Rueda, President of
Networks within the Information and Communication Mobile
Group. "We already have GSM customers in a number of
countries including Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, and Argentina,
and are therefore excellently placed in this region."
"BTL has always provided Belize with the latest technology
and our decision to have Siemens as our long term partner
providing their GSM and GPRS technology attests to this"
said Ediberto Tesucum, Chief Executive Officer of BTL. "We
look forward to building on this relationship in other areas
of telecommunications."
More than 646 million users (status in January 2002, GSM
Association) make GSM the world's most successful mobile
radio standard. With over 180 international customers in
more than 90 countries, Siemens IC Mobile is no. 3 worldwide
among system suppliers for GSM mobile networks.
The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC
Mobile) offers the complete range of mobile solutions
including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications.
Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile
organizers and cordless phones as well as products for
wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio
includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from
base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks,
e.g. for prepaid services. Mobile Applications cover
end-to-end solutions for Messaging, Location Based Services
or Mobile Payment. For the fiscal year 2001 (September 30),
IC Mobile recorded sales of EUR 11.3 billion and employed
30,730 people worldwide.
