iOra Launches Portable Portal Solution for Windows Powered Pocket PCs And Laptops

FREMONT, Calif. and BASINGSTOKE, England, May 21, 2002
-- iOra, today announced the launch of iOra Mobile Intranet for the Windows
Powered Pocket PC, a solution that takes the Pocket PC beyond personal information management. Businesses can now offer mobile executives a highly
compressed, portable version of the corporate intranet or portal on both laptop and Pocket PC. iOra's solutions synchronize laptop and Pocket PC with
server content tens to hundreds of times faster than other solutions, enabling high-speed synchronization even over low bandwidth dial up or wireless
connections. As a primary enterprise 'portable portal' application for both laptops and PDA's, the solution will extend the use of Pocket PCs in major
businesses.
Pocket PC - Enterprise Application
While many business users now own PDA's, they are primarily used for personal information management (PIM) such as calendar, tasks, email and contact
management. PDA's have the potential to provide greater value to businesses if they can be used to provide business critical information to mobile executives.
For example, providing corporate documents and information such as policy documents, corporate presentations, pricing spreadsheets and product fact sheets
make the PDA a more powerful tool in the hands of the mobile executive. Using iOra Mobile Intranet information published in a Microsoft SharePoint Portal
Server, for example, can be made available for offline access seamlessly on both Pocket PC and laptop.
"iOra Mobile Intranet is the first product that delivers all the key requirements to turn the Pocket PC into a powerful business tool," said Paddy Falls, CEO
iOra. "It supports both laptop and Pocket PC, manages any type of data, and provides central control over what data is distributed to allow management of
disk storage used, bandwidth usage, and security of data on the Pocket PC and laptop."
"The PDA spends most of its time disconnected from the network. Being connected only during the synchronization process means that all management of the
device needs to occur in a relatively short window of opportunity," said John Inverso, analyst at Gartner. "This adds a new tier to the network architecture,
whereby all management operations come down to an end point and are performed only when that device connects. This requires a change in thinking
regarding the way these devices are managed, since their very nature demands management methods."
iOra Mobile Intranet makes updating faster and easier regardless of how the Pocket PC is connected. With iOra Mobile Intranet for Pocket PC, the PDA can
be updated using the cradle or via wireless connections like GPRS or 3G. The technology that enables iOra to use less bandwidth than any other technology is
called Epsilon. This patent-pending technology is owned solely by iOra. Epsilon updates content 10s to 100s of times faster than other approaches, resulting in
significant performance improvements and cost savings over wireless networks like GPRS and 3G.
"iOra's Mobile Intranet application further extends the robust offerings from Windows Powered Pocket PCs to the enterprise," said Vimal Sethi, product
manager for the Mobility Group at Microsoft Corp. "Microsoft's vision is to give business customers access to their critical information anytime, anywhere. This
innovative portal solution supports that vision by providing business users with mobile access to their corporate intranet."
"Alaska Tanker has rigid safety guidelines that its tankers must follow while at sea," said Rick Powell, IT manager for Alaska Tanker. "We chose iOra Mobile
Intranet because it offered the most cost-effective solution for sending updates over a satellite connection. We're excited about implementing the new Mobile
Intranet for the Pocket PC will allow the captain and crew to get updates without leaving their post and going to the computer room."
