Siemens to supply GPRS technology to mobile operator Celcom
Malaysia -- The Malaysian mobile operator Celcom selected Siemens
Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) as the
supplier for GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network
technology. The agreement signed will involve Siemens IC
Mobile supplying and installing all the necessary components
for introducing GPRS, including switching technology and
software upgrades for the core network.
Siemens IC Mobile is initially supplying Celcom's GPRS core
network in Malaysia for coverage in the Klang Valley. Celcom
intends offering GPRS on a full-coverage basis in Malaysia
in further project phases. The GPRS solution from Siemens IC
Mobile consists of new network components, such as SGSN
(Serving GPRS Support Node) and GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support
Node), that are being installed in Celcom's network. Celcom
is one of the first GSM carriers in Malaysia able to offer
its customers a number of new services with GPRS, such as
faster internet and intranet access, Multimedia Messaging
(MMS), and expanded WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)
applications. Celcom hopes to launch the first GPRS services
onto the market as early as the third quarter of this year.
With more than two million customers, Celcom is one of the
country's leading mobile radio carrier. It is a wholly owned
subsidiary of the Malaysian technology corporation
Technology Resources Industries (TRI).
"We're delighted to be one of the first providers that will
shortly be able to offer our customers in Malaysia
attractive GPRS services based on GSM. Our thanks go to
Siemens IC Mobile for the successful collaboration we've
enjoyed," said En. Bistamam Ramli, Group Executive Vice
President from Celcom.
"This success is the result of Celcom's professionalism and
our experience with GPRS projects throughout the world. We'
re pleased to have this opportunity to demonstrate the
reliability of our GPRS technology to Celcom," said Dr.
Valentin Chapero Rueda, President of Networks within the
Information and Communication Mobile Group.
Users topping 640 million (Jan. '02 figure) have made GSM
the world's most successful mobile radio standard. With to
date more than 180 international customers in over 90
countries, Siemens IC Mobile is globally No. 3 among system
suppliers for GSM mobile radio networks. The Group has the
same top ranking for GPRS and UMTS.
The Siemens IC Mobile has succeeded to climb in only one
year up to position three from position six among the world'
s leading suppliers of wireless infrastructure.
With this positive development, the Networks division of
Siemens IC Mobile has successfully counteracted a market
environment that is currently characterized by a slowdown.
The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC
Mobile) offers the complete range of mobile solutions
including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications.
Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile
organizers and cordless phones as well as products for
wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio
includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from
base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks,
e.g. for prepaid services. Mobile Applications cover
end-to-end solutions for Messaging, Location Based Services
or Mobile Payment. For the fiscal year 2001 (September 30),
IC Mobile recorded sales of EUR 11.3 billion and employed
30,730 people worldwide.
