High-Density Echo Canceller Saves Central Office Floor Space and Cuts Installation Time in Half

NAPERVILLE, Ill., May 23, 2002 - Tellabs will unveil at Supercomm the Tellabs(R) 3600 voice-quality enhancement system that improves voice quality for digital wireless and long-distance service providers. With an optical interface, the Tellabs 3600 system provides four times the capacity of other voice-quality enhancement products that have electrical interfaces, which reduces central office floor space requirements. The Tellabs 3600 system's optical carrier, level 3 (OC-3) interface cuts installation time in half and its power consumption is 70 percent less than legacy broadband echo cancellers, helping carriers reduce operating expenses.

The Tellabs 3600 voice-quality enhancement system will be shown for the first time at Supercomm in booth 12731 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from June 4-6, and will be available in the third quarter of 2002. "Tellabs continually develops new state-of-the-art voice-quality enhancement products that offer high call-quality standards to our wireless and long-distance service provider customers," said David Powell, senior vice president of the Tellabs Network Enhancing Technology and Solutions group.

The Tellabs 3600 voice-quality enhancement system incorporates Tellabs high-performance voice processor technology to deliver superior voice quality under the most challenging network conditions, such as high background noise environments. The Tellabs 3600 system delivers superior call quality throughout the entire call, with the Tellabs Level Control feature that adjusts speech levels to the optimal level for the network. In addition, other optional features, such as Tellabs Acoustic Control and Tellabs Noise Reduction, enhance voice quality by removing the acoustic echo and background noise that impact call quality and customer satisfaction.

The Tellabs 3600 voice-quality enhancement system provides a maximum of 24,192 DS-0s (digital signal, level 0) equivalent to 12 OC-3s or 1,008 T-1s (trunk level 1) of echo cancellation signals per standard seven-foot bay. In addition, it has an embedded web server that enables local and remote provisioning of the Tellabs 3600 system.

Tellabs provides network equipment and professional services that help the world's leading communications carriers succeed in delivering today's services and enabling tomorrow's. The world communicates through Tellabs - most telephone calls and Internet sessions in several countries, including the United States, flow through the company's equipment. Employee-owners develop and deploy metro optical networking solutions and business connectivity services in partnership with Tellabs customers in more than 100 countries.
