Frankfurt, Germany (May 29th, 2002) LocatioNet, the developer of a comprehensive integrated platform for the delivery of location-based services for the wireless market, announced today that it has joined Motorola and other global technology companies in the development of a Mobile Tourist Guide (m-ToGuide). The goal of this project, endorsed by the European Community Information Society Technologies, is to provide the first of its kind true mobile LBS system for tourists; gathering GPRS and UMTS operators with leading technology providers, location-based systems providers and integrators. The vision of m-ToGuide is to become an automated mobile replacement to a human tourist guide. The LocatioNet Platform will support trials in Madrid, Siena, and London. Investment in the project will amount to more than 5 million Euros that will be subsidized by the EU.

LocatioNet and Motorola Global Telecom Solutions Sector Israel are joined with industry leaders such as Telefonica Moviles of Spain, Wind Telecommunications of Italy, and AntennaAudio of England, Amtec-Marconi of Italy, YellowMap of Germany and the global tourist operator Thomas Cook. With 17 companies in the consortium, bringing together high expertise in different areas, this innovative service is planned to complete development within the next 18 months.

During the project’s kickoff meeting held in Madrid last week the partners have stated that their challenge is to create “the most appealing and cost effective tourism experience enhancing service.”

Having won the financial support of the EU within its Information Society Technologies (IST) organization, the m-ToGuide will be both a service and a handheld mobile device that will be able to lead a tourist through the entire scope of a visit by incorporating the following provisions:

• Real-time tourist information guide

• Synchronized location-based services

• Tour planning

• User profiling and provisioning

• Security management of data

• Audio visual tour guiding in selected points of interest

• Navigation

• Booking and ticketing services

The LocatioNet Platform will serve as the mediation of the m-ToGuide project. The platform will integrate the positioning, based on GPS, and other advanced solutions; the mapping, GIS and content materials, allowing the tourist service applications to use and share all of this information.
