Nortel Networks, China Unicom to Deploy Multiservice Metro Networks in Tianjin, Shandong
BEIJING, May 30, 2002 - China Unicom has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT.) to build advanced multiservice metro
networks in Tianjin municipality and in the province of Shandong.
The new Tianjin network will position China Unicom to deliver Internet access to consumers and private line services to large institutions in metropolitan Tianjin
and the neighboring Tanggu area. Integrating data, voice and video, the new Shandong network is expected to be deployed in metropolitan Dezhou. It will link the
municipal government and other government agencies, significantly increasing efficiency and driving reduced operational costs.
"These two contracts further reinforce our networking strengths and our leadership position in building metro networks in China," said Robert Mao, president and
chief executive officer, Nortel Networks China. "We are firmly committed to working with China Unicom and other Chinese carriers in deploying networking
technologies designed to drive higher returns on customer relationships and increase profitability."
The Tianjin agreement provides for Nortel Networks to deploy Passport 15000 and Passport 7480 Multiservice Switches into China Unicom's ATM backbone
network. In addition, Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node (BSN) will be used to aggregate end-user Internet Protocol (IP) subscriber traffic
from the metro network, including China Unicom's existing IP metro network and its 165 Internet access network. Passport 6480 and 4460 switches and Shasta
5000 BSN will also be at the core of Nortel Networks solution under the contract for China Unicom's new Shandong metro network.
Nortel Networks Passport 15000 is a high-capacity, carrier-grade switch supporting ATM, frame relay, IP VPN, MPLS, circuit emulation and voice services.
Versatile, reliable and scalable, Passport 15000 is ideal for meeting the challenges of today's service provider networking environment, enabling them to 'grow as
they go' in terms of network expansion and deployment of new features.
Nortel Networks Passport 7400 switches offer high performance, cost savings, investment protection and management simplicity. Designed for today's service
provider, the versatile Passport 7400 is ideal for access adaptation and backbone switching, supporting ATM, frame relay, IP routing and switching, MPLS, circuit
emulation, and voice services.
Nortel Networks Passport 6400 multiservice edge switches reduce the cost and complexity of wide area networking by consolidating data, voice and video onto a
single network, and transporting enterprise LAN, data, telephony and video traffic over public or private networks.
Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN provides a universal aggregation point with capability to support wholesale dial, DSL, fixed and mobile wireless, metro optical
and Ethernet extension, ATM, frame relay, and leased line subscribers. It can help service providers increase their competitive advantage by transitioning from the
simple connectivity model enabled by first generation subscriber management systems to a cost-effective, network-based, value-added broadband services model.
In September 2001, China Unicom awarded 12 contracts to Nortel Networks to deploy multiservice backbone and optical solutions. Nortel Networks has also
supplied national ATM networks to China Telecom, China Netcom, China Railcom and Jitong Communications.
Nortel Networks is an industry leader and innovator focused on transforming how the world communicates and exchanges information. The company is supplying
its service provider and enterprise customers with communications technology and infrastructure to enable value-added IP data, voice and multimedia services
spanning Metro and Enterprise Networks, Wireless Networks and Optical Long Haul Networks. As a global company, Nortel Networks does business in more
than 150 countries. More information about Nortel Networks can be found on the Web at www.nortelnetworks.com.
