Insignia Demonstrates New Java(tm)-Enabling Technology for BREW(tm) Platform

Technology Allows Java Applications to Run on BREW-enabled Mobile Phones and Networks

San Diego, CA, June 3, 2002 - Insignia Solutions (Nasdaq: INSG) demonstrated at the BREW 2002 Developers Conference today the first implementation of Insignia's Mobile Foundation(tm) software that enables the provisioning of Java(tm) technology-based mobile services for QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(tm) (BREW(tm)) platform. The Insignia Mobile Foundation for BREW supports the complete Java(tm) 2, Micro Edition (J2ME(tm)) environment with a variety of high performance and rich media technologies optimized for BREW- enabled networks. The Insignia technology enables the entire library of Java content to now be available to millions of consumers worldwide using BREW-enabled phones. This will allow users to download and play games, view web pages and access a wide variety of new fun and useful mobile services.

"We have worked closely with Insignia to create the implementation of Java technology for BREW with an optimized version of their Insignia Mobile Foundation," said Peggy Johnson, president, QUALCOMM Internet Services. "Insignia's technology and innovation makes them an integral part of our vision for the BREW solution. This partnership is yet another example of QUALCOMM's commitment to extending the BREW platform to the entire spectrum of wireless application developers."

"Insignia is leveraging its Java heritage to focus on how wireless carriers can capitalize on their mobile services strategy, and this new product brings those capabilities to the BREW platform," said Rick Noling, chief executive officer of Insignia. "We'll continue to listen to the market and deliver the technology and products necessary to be integral to the success of wireless carriers and device manufacturers."

The Insignia Mobile Foundation for BREW is being demonstrated at the show on a LG VX-10 handset. Insignia provides a highly optimized version of Insignia's Enhanced CLDC/MIDP(tm) implementation for high performance and rich media ready J2ME capabilities along with Insignia's JPAL(tm) abstraction technology to speed porting of the environment to new platforms. By using Insignia JPAL framework, the initial port of Insignia Mobile Foundation for BREW took less than three weeks. The unique Java class representations provided by Insignia Mobile Foundation allow the entire CLDC/MIDP system libraries to fit the extremely severe memory constraints of mass market devices, while still providing room to add Insignia's Dynamic Adaptive Compilation to the VM for essential Java acceleration. The above, combined with unique optimizations for BREW, enable the software to run efficiently in extremely small devices where Java capabilities were previously unavailable.

QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(tm) (software development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by carriers - enabling them to easily get applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server. The BREW platform is a product of QUALCOMM Internet Services (QIS), a division within the QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet (QWI) Group of QUALCOMM Incorporated. Currently 16 wireless carriers have signaled their support for the BREW platform. Korea's KTF, Verizon Wireless in the United States and KDDI in Japan have each commercially launched BREW products and services.
