SAN DIEGO--Jan. 16, 2002--
New gpsOne Feature Enables Handset-Based A-GPS Calculations for Broader Range of Commercial Applications
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
digital wireless technology, today announced a new gpsOne(TM) mobile-based product feature for position location related
applications and services. The new feature for the Company's gpsOne Wireless Assisted GPS(TM) (WAG) positioning
system enables position location calculations directly in the mobile device (i.e., a mobile phone, wireless PDA or child safety
tag) in addition to supporting positioning fixes performed by a location server, as in earlier gpsOne releases. The gpsOne
mobile-based positioning feature maintains the advantages of WAG (a form of Assisted Global Positioning System, or
A-GPS technology) while optimizing support for wireless applications such as navigation, telematics, health and personal
security, and real-time asset tracking services. SnapSmart(TM) location server software, a product of SnapTrack(TM), Inc.,
which is a subsidiary of QUALCOMM, and Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) software releases supporting gpsOne
mobile-based positioning are expected to be available before June 2002.
gpsOne, the industry leading WAG solution by QUALCOMM, integrates SnapTrack technology with GPS satellite and
CDMA network information to provide a high-availability solution that offers proven industry-leading accuracy and
performance -- both indoors and out. The gpsOne solution provides the world's most cost-effective, high-availability solution
for wireless position location technology in a mobile handset and meets the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
mandate requiring wireless operators to provide the location of 911 calls.
An end-to-end network-based gpsOne solution is commercially available today from QUALCOMM and licensed
distributors, and includes the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM3300(TM) and MSM5100(TM) chipsets
with fully integrated gpsOne technology for CDMA IS-95 and IS-2000 standards, and SnapTrack's SnapSmart location
server software. QCT has also announced its multimode MSM6xxx family of chips, selected members of which will feature
integrated gpsOne technology. The MSM6xxx family will offer wireless solutions for CDMA2000 1X/1xEV, Global System
for Mobile Communications (GSM), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Wideband CDMA (WCDMA).
The gpsOne solution, enhanced by the mobile-based mode, is fully compatible with SnapTrack's SnapSmart location
server software and will enable a broad range of position location services, including personal navigation information, mobile
yellow pages directories, traffic reports and commercial tracking services, as well as entertainment applications including
mobile games and friend-finder services.
Headquartered in Campbell, California, SnapTrack pioneered WAG and owns patents that are fundamental to the
cost-effective deployment of WAG-based location systems. SnapTrack's Hybrid WAG architecture offers anytime,
anywhere, accurate high-speed position location capabilities for finding a wireless caller, even inside buildings where
conventional GPS does not operate. The Company's WAG products include the SnapSmart location server software system,
the SnapCore(TM) multimode GPS solution and the SnapWARN(TM) GPS reference data feed service. SnapTrack has
commercial agreements with major wireless chipset manufacturers that provide most of the wireless modem chipsets to the
industry. In addition, many major carriers have chosen to deploy products and services incorporating SnapTrack technology.
