Lucent Technologies Provides Cingular Wireless With Software to Enable Seamless Roaming Between TDMA and GSM Networks

MURRAY HILL, N.J., Jan. 16 -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) said today that Cingular Wireless, the nation's second largest wireless carrier, has selected software from Lucent to provide interoperability between Cingular's existing TDMA and GSM networks in the United States. Cingular's customers will benefit by being able to use wireless service from Cingular without regard to the underlying technology.

The Lucent Interworking Interoperability Function (IIF) Gateway software will allow Cingular Wireless to offer its subscribers seamless roaming throughout the entire network regardless of the air interface. The software helps to integrate infrastructures based on two different types of technology to create a single, nationwide network. The Gateway software also can be utilized as Cingular overlays GSM in its current TDMA markets.

The Gateway software supports two-way interoperability between network elements allowing information about mobile subscribers to be shared between GSM and TDMA networks that have traditionally been incompatible. The Gateway complies with GAIT standards. GAIT (GSM/ANSI-136 Interoperability Team) is an industry forum that developed specifications for roaming between GSM and TDMA, also known as ANSI-136.

"We're pleased to be able to help Cingular improve service and cut costs by creating stronger links between their TDMA and GSM networks," said Joe McCarthy, sales vice president at Lucent Technologies. "Lucent is pleased to collaborate with Cingular on this important program."
