Announces Intent to Join Forces With the Newly Formed Open
Mobile Alliance -OMA-
VANCOUVER, CANADA, Jun 13, 2002 - Building upon the momentum LIF has created for accelerating mobile location
services; resulting in mass-market commercialization The Location Interoperability Forum (LIF), representing over 100 companies worldwide developing mobile
location services and solutions, announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) expressing its intent to consolidate the organization
with the newly formed Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).
The Location Interoperability Forum (LIF) is a global industry organization dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of location-based services. By
developing and promoting specifications for an interoperable and secure location services solution, end user location information can be made available securely to
the application, irrespective of the underlying network technology and positioning methods.
By representing the key value chain players in the mobile location services industry, LIF has established itself as the leading global organization for promoting
commercialization of Mobile Location Services worldwide.
"By consolidating with OMA, LIF would ensure its specifications are aligned with market and customer requirements. OMA's envisioned centers of excellence for
best practices and conduct for interoperability testing (IOT) would ensure that LIF's specifications interoperate with the industry-defined mobile applications
architecture framework," said Bilal Saleh, LIF Chairman of the Board, and Fellow of the Technical Staff at Motorola.
Location Services is recognized as a key enabler for advanced mobile services, enhancing the user experience by providing personalized and context-sensitive
applications.
"Being the leading industry organization for location services, LIF would bring a wealth of technical specifications, expertise and established industry relationships
to OMA," said Jerry Upton, Interim Chairman of OMA. "This would basically make LIF the location services technical arm for OMA." About the Location
