Savi Technology and QUALCOMM Launch Strategic Product Integration Initiative to Deliver Total Supply Chain Visibility and Security
Combined GPS/Active RFID Product Suite Will Ensure End-to-End, In-Transit
Visibility and Security for Maritime, Rail and Truck Transportation
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. & SAN DIEGO, Jun 14, 2002 - Today at the National Cargo Security Conference, Savi Technology, the
leading provider of real-time solutions for global supply chain security and asset management, and QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM), the leader
in mobile communications for the transportation industry, announced a strategic product initiative to integrate the companies' tracking, management and security
products into a comprehensive hardware/software solution for in-transit visibility and security of transportation containers and their contents for the maritime,
rail and truck industries. Developed in response to requests from existing and prospective customers, this integrated solution will create a comprehensive
system for transportation carriers, service providers and owners of supply chain assets to manage, monitor and secure shipments.
The product initiative combines QUALCOMM's market-leading OmniTRACS(R) and OmniExpress(R) mobile communications systems, network operations
and fleet management, with Savi's proven real-time solutions that leverage their latest, sixth generation, active radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology
-- including electronic security seals -- with enterprise software that improves the management and security of supply chain assets. The result of this integrated
product initiative is the first real-time solution that encompasses the visibility and management of fleet operations with management and security of supply chain
assets, such as maritime containers, reusable transport containers, truck trailers, rail cars and intermodal containers.
Savi and QUALCOMM have over a decade of expertise in supporting the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) with technologies for use in the DoD's
wireless tracking infrastructure called the Total Asset Visibility (TAV) network, which provides In-Transit Visibility (ITV) for military assets and cargo. This
infrastructure enables the DoD -- one of the largest shippers in the world -- to securely ship, manage and monitor its cargo. Based on Automatic Identification
Technologies (AIT), including RFID from Savi and satellite communications from QUALCOMM, the DoD's expanding TAV infrastructure monitors and
manages 250,000 conveyances that move military supplies through 350 locations in more than 36 countries.
"This alliance builds on a productive history of collaboration between QUALCOMM and Savi Technology," said Chris Wolfe, president of QUALCOMM
Wireless Business Solutions. "Integrating wide-area networks with local-area networks for the purpose of comprehensive asset management is a powerful
idea. We look forward to working with Savi to make continuous monitoring, real-time inventory visibility and supply chain security a reality."
OmniTRACS and OmniExpress systems are industry-leading wireless mobile communications and tracking systems that provide real-time messaging and
position reporting between fleets and their operations centers. QUALCOMM has offered fleet management solutions since 1988, and serves over 1,300
customers including 20 of the top 25 tank truck carriers and 38 of the top 40 truckload carriers. Today, QUALCOMM's mobile communications systems
function in 33 countries on four continents and vehicles are monitored via nine QUALCOMM Network Management Centers worldwide.
"QUALCOMM's OmniTRACS system is a perfect complement to Savi's solution set," said Vikram Verma, president and CEO of Savi Technology.
"Transportation companies are trying to find ways to ensure the security of their shipments and enable continuous inventory tracking for their customers. The
combined solution that Savi and QUALCOMM offer will enable them to do both while also delivering significant operational efficiencies."
Savi Technology is the industry-leading supplier of real-time supply chain security and asset management software solutions that uniquely leverage data from
AIT systems such as RFID, GPS, and other satellite systems. Savi's leading RFID technology platform, EchoPoint, is the basis for Savi's SmartSeal(TM)
family of electronic seals and its new 600-Series RFID system. In addition, Savi's Universal Data Appliance Protocol (UDAP) has been widely adopted as an
open communications protocol that enables complete interoperability with all automated data collection systems such as RFID, Barcode, GPS and other data
collection systems.
