New Graphics Test Suite To Help Deliver Better Content To The Consumer

British Games Company Develops Freely Available Programs for Industry-wide Use.

Oxford, England, June 17th 2002 - FastRam Design has today announced the availability of a suite of test graphics MIDlets and Applets to help the industry identify the most appropriate Java solutions for the targeting of content. These can be downloaded from the FastRAM website (www.fastram.co.uk).

Whilst Sun's MIDP and PersonalJava standards provide a guarantee that all correctly written MIDlet and Applet applications will run on all platforms without recompilation, the Java software combined with the handset hardware are simply unable to run targeted games at a performance acceptable to the consumer. FastRam Design has developed the test MIDlets and Applets provided on its website so that interested parties can assess how capable their PersonalJava/MIDP device or various other Java software engines are at running graphical content.

The three Applets and MIDlets are 'Cobra', a 3D wireframe graphics test, 'Firecracker', a graphics plotting and colour rendering test, and 'Saloon', an image rendering test.

"By identifying the most powerful and efficient software platforms for target devices, the manufacturers will then be able to help carriers deliver more interesting content to consumers. This obviously has a big and positive impact on the OEMs and the networks in terms of increased revenue, but it is also vital for content developers such as FastRam", said Dawn Camus of FastRam, "We have now looked at a range of compliant engines and of those, intent from the Tao Group delivers hugely superior performance over any alternative."

To prove the differences that the leading compliant Java VM solutions have on the major platforms, FastRam undertook various benchmarks, comparing solutions on both Symbian and Windows CE editions for example. "In the case of comparing Tao's intent running our MIDlets against the MIDp solution from Sun, intent ran the applications many times faster. It was equally superior when running our Applets on PersonalJava from Tao multiple times faster than Insignia's Jeode," said Camus. "When we as the applications and content developers are working with manufacturers and carriers to deliver wireless games, it is critical that we do everything that we can to meet consumer expectations. Our hope is that a focus on test programs that accurately represent real world requirements will help the entire community by ensuring that consumers get what they want. It is in the interests of meeting this goal that we have made our graphics test applications available for download from today."
