Ericsson Technology Strengthens Cingular's Nationwide Coverage and Roaming Capabilities
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan 16, 2002 -- Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERICY) announced that Cingular Wireless, the second largest
wireless carrier in the U.S., will use Ericsson's JAMBALA(TM) Mobility Gateway to strengthen nationwide roaming capabilities, seamlessly linking
GSM and TDMA networks.
Ericsson's JAMBALA(TM) Mobility Gateway forms the infrastructure foundation for GSM/ANSI-136 Interoperability Team (GAIT) phones, which
allow users to roam transparently between GSM and TDMA networks using a single handset.
Acting as the network's Interworking and Interoperability Function (IIF) node, the JAMBALA Mobility Gateway will help Cingular Wireless provide
subscribers with advanced calling features, two-way short messaging service (SMS) and mobile Internet services anywhere in the network - regardless
of which technology the subscriber is using.
"Ericsson's JAMBALA Mobility Gateway bridges technically diverse networks, helping Cingular Wireless provide its customers with broad coverage
and increased access to Cingular's nationwide network," said Anders Olin, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Ericsson's Cingular
Account Team. "We are very pleased to be providing this core functionality as Cingular transitions to a nationwide high-speed third generation
network."
Ericsson is already working with Cingular to deploy a state-of-the-art wireless network for delivery of 3G offerings in the US. Ericsson is supplying
GSM/GPRS/EDGE infrastructure including core network, radio access infrastructure, operation and maintenance systems. In addition, Sony Ericsson
Mobile Communications is developing GAIT handsets to support the migration of multi-technology networks.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative
solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
Cingular Wireless is the second largest wireless carrier in the U.S., and is dedicated to self-expression and customer-friendly service. As a leader in
mobile voice and data communications, Cingular, a joint venture between SBC Communications and BellSouth, currently serves over 20 million
customers nationwide. Cingular offers customers advanced technologies in simple, cost-effective ways that permit them to tap the creative potential of
wireless through their own self-expression. Details of the company are available at www.cingular.com.
