Intel Ships the World's First 2 Gigahertz Microprocessor for Mobile PCs
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jun 24, 2002 - Intel Corporation today announced it has begun shipping the world's first
microprocessor designed for mobile PCs to operate at 2 gigahertz (GHz) -- or two billion cycles per second. The new Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4
processor-M delivers outstanding performance for business and consumer laptops, enabling a richer Internet experience, faster digital media,
increasing business productivity and new applications such as wireless gaming.
Intel's commitment to designing high performance processors, chipsets and wireless solutions for every type of mobile PC is helping to grow the
worldwide mobile segment. In the last 12 years, Intel has delivered more than 100 million mobile processors. Industry analyst firm Gartner Group
predicts that over the next four years, laptop sales will grow at almost twice the rate of the overall PC market.(2)
"Systems based on the new 2 GHz Mobile Pentium 4 processor-M provide businesses and consumers with the horse power to tackle the most
demanding compute, communications, digital and multimedia applications," said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president, Intel's Mobile Platforms
Group. "It took the industry 11 years to reach 1 GHz in mobile computing. We've doubled that frequency to 2 GHz in only 15 months."
Two Gigahertz To Go
Powerful laptops continue to be critical business productivity tools and are also increasingly purchased by consumers. The Mobile Intel Pentium 4
processor-M at 2 GHz includes the performance to run several productivity applications simultaneously while running background programs such as
encryption, compression, virus scan, client management, and Virtual Private Networks. With 2 GHz performance and advanced power management
features, the new Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M is an outstanding solution for corporate users.
Consumers are also valuing the freedom and flexibility of high performance laptops. They are taking Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M based
laptops on their summer vacations and road trips so they can listen to MP3 music files, entertain the kids with DVD movies, store their digital
photographs, and stay connected with family and friends via e-mail.
For gaming enthusiasts, the 2 GHz processor from Intel, combined with wireless connectivity, enables a new level of mobile gaming, allowing
players wherever they are to compete over wireless connections in intensive multiplayer competitions.
New Ways To Measure Mobile Performance
According to the newest mobile benchmark from BAPCo, MobileMark(TM) 2002, users of Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M based laptops at 2
GHz will experience two times faster performance on multitasking office productivity applications and almost three hours of battery life compared to
the fastest mobile processor just one year ago (Mobile Intel Pentium III processor). In addition, consumers will find almost two times better
performance in their Internet experience according to the WebMark(1) benchmark when using the same comparisons.
Products, Specifications and Pricing
Intel today also announced the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M at 1.90 GHz and mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) processors at 1.50, 1.40 and 1.33
GHz. The Intel Celeron processors at 1.50 and 1.40 GHz feature a 400 MHz system bus and the 1.33 GHz features a 133 MHz system bus. All of
the processors are shipping in volume worldwide with systems available from leading PC makers.
Intel's entire line of mobile processors is designed on its 0.13-micron technology offering the highest levels of performance and low power
consumption. The Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M family is available at speeds ranging from 1.40 GHz to 2 GHz. The processor includes 55
million transistors, support for Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) technology and the Deeper Sleep Alert State.
In 1,000-unit quantities, in Micro-Flip Chip Pin Grid Array (uFCPGA) packaging, the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M at 2 GHz and 1.90 GHz
are priced at $637 and $401, respectively. In 1,000-unit quantities, in Micro-Flip Chip Pin Grid Array (uFCPGA) packaging, the mobile Celeron
processor at 1.50, 1.40 and 1.33 GHz are priced at $170, $149 and $134, respectively.
Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information
