Valence Supplies Pogo Technology with Battery Solution for Wireless Phone and Internet Access Device

AUSTIN, Texas--Jan. 17, 2002--Valence Technology Inc. (Nasdaq:VLNC), a leader in the development and commercialization of Lithium-ion polymer rechargeable batteries, today announced that it has commenced shipment of an initial order for 5,000 battery packs to Pogo Technology Ltd., a European developer of mobile communications devices.

The battery packs are powering "the Pogo," the first U.K. wireless device to offer full mobile Internet access without the need for 3G technology. Sean Fernback, Pogo's head of engineering, commented, "We are very pleased to be working with Valence on this revolutionary product. The Pogo's excellent run time, fast recharge time and sleek design were made possible largely by Valence's ability to deliver a unique energy solution." The Pogo is currently available for purchase in the U.K. through Carphone Warehouse at www.carphonewarehouse.com. A U.S. launch of the product is being considered for 2002.

The Pogo device, a sophisticated PDA/mobile phone hybrid, combines unrestricted Internet access with e-mail, SMS, diary, networked address book, MP3 player and phone capabilities. The device features Pogo's exclusive compression-based technology that allows wireless Internet browsing at an effective bandwidth of 56Kbps, more than five times the rate of 9.6Kbps currently offered by GSM data devices. Valence's Lithium-ion polymer batteries were selected because of their ability to meet the demanding energy requirements of this application in a thin, unique design.

Stephan Godevais, CEO of Valence, remarked, "The Pogo is clearly a breakthrough product for the wireless market. The delay in the implementation of 3G technology is going to increase the longer-term need for this type of device. With Carphone Warehouse as its channel partner, the Pogo is in an ideal position to gain market share. We see great potential for the Pogo and we're delighted to be part of this exciting program."
