Adelaide Zoo Mobilizes Conservation Efforts With Enterasys Networks' RoamAbout Wireless Solution

State-of-the-Art Wireless Network to Deliver Advanced Interactive Visitor Services

ROCHESTER, N.H., Jul 18, 2002 - Enterasys Networks Inc. (NYSE: ETS), a leader in enterprise networking solutions, today announced that Adelaide Zoo, the second oldest zoo in Australia, has implemented "ZooNET", a high-performance wireless network based exclusively on Enterasys' RoamAbout wireless technology. The innovative solution, which will deliver advanced interactive visitor services, was designed and installed by MIMP, one of Enterasys' leading channel partners in Australia.

As members of the public visit the zoo and its animal enclosures, the Enterasys-based wireless network will seamlessly deliver detailed information and statistics on each animal via handheld PCs or laptop computers housed with RoamAbout PC cards. The RoamAbout solution will also support the Zoo's conservation efforts, enabling educational programs on its endangered blue and gold macaws to be delivered to wireless-connected notebook PCs and handheld computers. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about preservation initiatives and even contribute through the World Parrot Trust.

Future services will include virtual web tours, utilizing the wireless infrastructure to deliver live images from within animal enclosures to Internet users globally, providing web visitors with a unique insight into animal behavior and habitat.

"The choice of wireless over a wired network solution was a very simple business decision," said Duncan Redman, Adelaide Zoo's Business Manager. "The Zoo's computers are located all over our eight hectare site, so wiring the network was not feasible. It would have involved costly and disruptive trenching for the cable - something that was not acceptable to the Zoo Board."

"As well as solving our immediate networking requirements, the Enterasys RoamAbout wireless solution has provided us with a technologically advanced solution which will enable Zoo visitors to benefit from improved access to our Visitors Services once the online content has been completed," Redman continued. "It has also enabled us to plan for the second phase of our wireless network project - the implementation of VoIP using wireless."

Today, the wireless solution, encompassing RoamAbout Access Points strategically positioned throughout the Zoo, delivers high-performance mobile network access, with inherent authentication and encryption features ensuring a highly secure infrastructure. The wireless network provides the zoo with a cost-effective alternative to hard-wired cabling, linking administrative offices with seamless mobile access to the Internet, intranet, e-mail and day-to-day applications.

"Adelaide Zoo's implementation once again demonstrates the flexibility and mobility of the RoamAbout wireless LAN technology," said Gerard Vivier, president of Enterasys Networks, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. "In environments where fixed wired networking is impractical, the ease of implementation and management of a wireless LAN, coupled with its power to deliver information into the hands of both staff and visitors to the zoo, shows the future of portable and handheld computing activity. Without RoamAbout wireless, the Zoo could not achieve its goals of educating and informing its visitors, and spread its wider conservation messages to the global community."

About Adelaide Zoo

Adelaide Zoo was opened to the public on 23rd May 1883. It is the second oldest zoo in Australia (after Melbourne Zoo, 1862) and was established at a time of great resurgence and interest in natural history. Adelaide Zoo was originally constructed on 6.5 hectares of the Botanic Park and now occupies 8 hectares of well laid out pathways and exhibits set amidst beautiful trees and gardens. It is unique among Australian zoos, as it has retained many original and significant architectural features, giving it a style and character all of its own.
