'American Idol' Fans Get Behind-the-Scenes Scoop Using Interactive Text Messaging Service
In an industry first for the U.S., TV viewer involvement extends to wireless phones
SEATTLE, Jul 22, 2002 - Simon said what?! The finalists are who?! Fox Broadcasting, AT&T Wireless,
Mobliss, and producers FremantleMedia and 19 Television have teamed up to bring the 'American Idol: The Search for a Superstar' audience
the latest buzz surrounding this summer's hottest hit, directly to their wireless phones.
Beginning today, all text messaging users can receive alerts on their wireless phones that give 'American Idol' fans news, behind-the-scenes
information and more. Additionally, AT&T Wireless customers can use their two-way text messaging service to participate in real-time show
polls, trivia and quizzes. AT&T Wireless subscribers can now clamor about the contestants, dish on who got dissed, share what Simon said,
and even interact with other wireless 'Idol' fans, nationwide.
All mobile phone subscribers with text messaging capabilities can sign up at http://amidol.mobliss.com to receive alerts on their wireless phones
about Fox's 'American Idol.' AT&T Wireless two-way text messaging customers can compose a message with the word "IDOL" and send it to
an abbreviated number, 4365 (IDOL), to sign up for interactive polling and trivia questions.
"With its emphasis on viewer involvement and participation, 'American Idol' is an ideal program to engage today's wireless phone users," said
Roberta Mell, Executive Vice President, Marketing for FOX. "The opportunities for polling, trivia and show insider information create an
interactive experience that extends and enriches the viewer's enjoyment of the show."
"Text messaging is one of the hottest new ways to communicate -- and, if anyone knows what's hot, it 's the viewers of American Idol," said
John Bunyan, senior vice president, AT&T Wireless Mobile Multimedia Services. "Wireless phones can do much more than place phone calls
these days. And now, with a few simple clicks on a phone keypad, AT&T Wireless customers can plug into the 'American Idol' phenomenon
while on the go."
"We are pleased to provide the American public with an additional source for time-sensitive news, information and fun surrounding the extremely
popular 'American Idol' show," says Brian Levin, president and co-founder of Mobliss. "These wireless applications are a perfect tie-in for this
medium. Fans of the show will not have to go without the latest 'American Idol' information any longer, thanks to these mobile alerts."
Fox's 'American Idol' airs live on Tuesday 9:00 p.m. / 8:00 Central and Wednesdays 9:30 pm / 8:30 Central.
