Launches Worldwide Cash and Prize Giveaway Competition for JPDA Developers
FREMONT, Calif., Jul 23, 2002 - Insignia (Nasdaq:INSG) today began a search for the world's finest JPDA application
developer in a global competition to promote the creation and public availability of Java(TM) applets and applications designed for use in
high-performance Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).
Software developers from business, academia and just with individual interest will be challenged to compete to develop the most innovative and
industry applicable applications for the handheld and enterprise markets. Along with Insignia, the JPDA 2002 Application Developers Contest is
sponsored by HP, Intel, Metrowerks, Sharp, Softbank Publishing and Sun Microsystems.
The JPDA 2002 Application Developers Contest starts on July 23, 2002. Final entries must be submitted by September 10, 2002 for the Japanese
applications category, and by October 31, 2002 for all English language-based categories. Winners in the Japanese category will be announced at
the JavaOne Developers Conference, Japan, from September 25 through September 27, 2002. The grand prize winner and winners of the other
categories will be announced at Comdex Fall 2002 in Las Vegas from November 18 through November 22, 2002.
Details about the JPDA 2002 Application Developers Contest are available at: www.insignia.com/jpda2002.
"We want to find the best Java application developer brains on the planet and create tangible application ideas that can be put into practice for
genuine commercial uses," said Peter Baldwin, executive vice president of operations of Insignia. "The winning designs stand a chance of being
taken to market by Insignia and its business partners, should they match specific commercial requirements."
"We see Java as one of the key technologies for enabling innovation in the next generation of applications and solutions for the iPAQ Pocket PC,"
said Cindy Box, director of product marketing for smart handhelds, HP. "The Java environment provides developers the power and flexibility to
create everything from enterprise solutions to personal entertainment applications. We hope this contest will highlight the utility of Java and
encourage the development of Java applications for the iPAQ Pocket PC."
"Through the Intel(R) Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel(R) PCA), Intel has long recognized that innovative applications are what will help
drive the wireless and handheld market segment." said Ken Edwards, ISV Market Development Manager for Intel's PCA Components group.
"Java is clearly emerging as a key environment for compelling new consumer and enterprise applications. Intel supports Insignia's JPDA 2002
Application Developers Contest as a creative way to spark new wireless applications, content and services."
Metrowerks, a longtime Insignia partner, will offer a special discount on its CodeWarrior Wireless Studio tools to all contest participants.
Metrowerks' CodeWarrior toolset was the first to support PersonalJava. It provides everything developers need to create compelling applications
that run on a Jeode-based PDA, an HP iPAQ, or a Sharp Zaurus, including Sun's PersonalJava(TM) Emulation Environment and RAD tools to
visually create user interfaces based on AWT components.
"Java technology on PDAs presents developers with a great opportunity to create compelling applications that run across leading platforms like HP
and Sharp PDAs. This contest should be very attractive to developers who are interested in Java on mobile devices, as it gives them a chance to
win great prizes and to promote their applications," said Gerardo Dada, senior marketing manager at Metrowerks. "CodeWarrior Wireless Studio
provides all the tools developers need to create powerful and innovative PersonalJava and J2ME applications for mobile devices."
"As a PDA device manufacturer, we are very honored to be one of the sponsors of this developers contest, as we think this contest will expand the
market for PDAs that implement Java technologies," said Dr. Hiroshi Uno, general manager of Sharp's Mobile Systems Division. "With the
participation of many Java developers, we hope to see various Java solutions and applications that meet our customers' requirements."
"Handhelds and PDAs are a great platform for mobile applications and services. Their power, resources and capabilities provide a highly featured
system, making them an important market for mobile developers," said Tracey Stout, vice president, Java and XML Software, Sun Microsystems.
"The Java platform gives developers the tools and mobile technologies they need to create imaginative, portable applications and Web services
today. The contest gives Java developers the opportunity to show us the kinds of creative Java software and web services we can expect to see
tomorrow."
Developers may submit their Java applets and applications for consideration. The contest is open to all developers in eligible countries throughout
the world. The grand prize winner will receive $10,000 cash plus the prize for first place in the appropriate category. First, second and third place
finishers will receive prizes in each category including computer and home entertainment equipment. Softbank Publishing is sponsoring the Japanese
category. Prizes for this category will be announced at a later date. Also, prize winners in each category may have the opportunity to work with the
contest sponsors to further promote the winning applications to additional customers and channels.
