Motorola Leverages BSQUARE's Device Development Package and Professional Services Group to Customize and Test Windows CE .NET Software Components
BELLEVUE, WA - July 30, 2002 - BSQUARE Corporation (NASDAQ: BSQR) today
announced that Motorola, Inc's Broadband Communications Sector selected the
SmartBuild Solution Suite to develop software components for a new handheld,
color, touch-screen tablet. The Motorola EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer
wirelessly connects to any cable modem or modem-equipped digital set-top
terminal to enrich the television viewing experience. As one of the first
devices based on Microsoft Windows CE .NET under development, the Motorola
EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer demonstrates BSQUARE's potential to help
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) shorten product development cycles.
Motorola leveraged many of BSQUARE's device development products and
services to build software components for its EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer.
The SmartBuild Solution Suite provided pre-integrated, tested, and certified
components, including Windows CE .NET system platform software, application
framework, and applications such as e-mail, chat, instant messaging, and Web
browser. Motorola also utilized BSQUARE's consulting services to customize
components and create a rich graphical user interface (GUI).
"Motorola selected BSQUARE to assist in the development of our Enhanced TV
Viewer primarily for their extensive product and service expertise in
embedded Windows CE device development," said Dale Papovitch, director of
business development for Motorola Broadband's digital consumer gateways
business.
"Faced with ever shorter design and development cycles, as well as greater
platform complexity, more and more leading companies like Motorola are
turning to BSQUARE for our deep expertise in developing embedded Windows
devices," Bill Baxter, president and CEO of BSQUARE. "Motorola's EVr-8401
Enhanced TV Viewer will enhance consumers' broadband experiences by making
it easier than ever to retrieve information and entertainment services and
stay connected - literally from anywhere in their homes."
BSQUARE Device Development Solution Suite
The SmartBuild Solution Suite provides all the key components required to
bring a smart device to market. The development package includes
pre-qualified hardware platforms, OS integration, UI design tools, browser
plug-ins (Insignia JVM, Macromedia FLASH, Stellent Quick View Plus),
applications and device management tools. The development package is fully
integrated into Microsoft's Platform Builder IDE so components (device
drivers, plug-ins, applications, remote management) can be selected for
integration into the target embedded device. The interface design tool
allows creation of "skinnable" user interfaces to provide full control of
the design, look, feel, and functionality of the device. The remote
management software allows ISPs to update and maintain IA devices remotely
with little or no user intervention. This software also makes it possible to
add new features to the devices once they've been deployed.
Motorola EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer
The Motorola EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer connects to either a Motorola
advanced-interactive digital set-top terminal's cable modem or a stand-alone
cable modem for an "always-on," high-speed connection. When wirelessly
connected to a high-speed data cable service, the Motorola EVr-8401 offers
users a second screen for accessing Internet content relating to the TV
programming they are watching. Users are able to casually view content from
the Internet on the Motorola EVr-8401 while they and those also in the room
continue watching the TV programming - uninterrupted and in full-screen
video.
The Motorola EVr-8401's interactive programming, Internet, e-mail, chat, and
instant messaging applications are accessible through a remote IR keyboard,
touch-screen keyboard, or on-screen handwriting recognition. EVr-8401 users
can also play MP3 audio from the Web, link simultaneously to the Web site of
the television program being watched, and tune channels - via the
remote-control function - on a Motorola advanced digital set-top terminal or
other consumer electronic product such as a TV or VCR. In addition to its
second-screen and remote control functionalities, the Motorola EVr-8401 can
be used as a portable device to access the Internet, e-mail, and other
online services from anywhere in and around the home.
