Siemens expands mobile network for GSM operator in Belarus
The mobile operator LLC MTS has commissioned the Siemens
Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) to
expand the GSM network in Belarus. LLC MTS is a joint
venture of the leading Russian mobile operator Mobile
Telesystems (MTS) and the Belarusian telecom group
Mezhdugorodnyaya Svyaz.
In accordance with the contract just signed,
Siemens IC Mobile will supply mobile switching and radio technology for
the second and third network construction phases, and equip
the network with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). LLC
MTS started up the first network section, which covers the
capital and Minsk airport, on schedule at the end of June.
The next phase will extend GSM coverage to the cities of
Brest, Gomel and Vitebsk by the end of the year. The third
phase expand the network to up to 90 percent of the
Belarusian territory and the major transnational roads.
LLC MTS is the first mobile operator in Belarus to offer its
customers both the GSM 900 and the GSM 1800 standard. The
second largest Belarusian provider currently has about 7,000
customers. After completion of the third construction phase,
the capacity of the network is enlarged for more than
350,000 subscribers.
"Belarus has a population of ten million and the penetration
rate is only 2 percent. This is an interesting market, which
we believe is likely to experience rapid growth," said MTS
president Mikhail Smirnov. "With the help of the reliable
technology from our partner Siemens, we provide our
subscribers in Belarus and roamers with high quality mobile
communications".
"The Belarusian mobile market is a market with lots of
potential. These new expansion contracts represent the
successful continuation of our long-term cooperation with
MTS," said Dr. Valentin Chapero Rueda, President of Networks
within the Information and Communication Mobile Group.
Siemens IC Mobile has been supplying GSM infrastructure to
Mobile Telesystems (MTS), Russia's leading mobile provider,
since 1994. In December 2001, Siemens IC Mobile and MTS also
started up a UMTS test network in Moscow with voice and data
transmission in order to test third generation mobile
applications.
More than 680 million users have made GSM the world's most
successful mobile radio standard. With to date more than 180
international customers in over 90 countries, Siemens IC
Mobile is globally No. 3 among system suppliers for GSM
mobile radio networks. The Group has the same top ranking
for GPRS and UMTS. In only one year, Siemens IC Mobile has
succeeded in moving from sixth to third place among the
world's leading suppliers of wireless infrastructure. With
this positive development, the Networks Division of Siemens
IC Mobile has successfully counteracted a difficult market
environment.
The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC
Mobile) offers the complete range of mobile solutions
including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications.
Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile
organizers and cordless phones as well as products for
wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio
