China Mobile Selects Nortel Networks to Grow GSM Network in Shaanxi Province
BEIJING, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 2002--China Mobile, the largest wireless carrier in the People's Republic of China, has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT - News; TSX:NT.) to expand its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) digital cellular network in Shaanxi Province under a contract estimated to be worth approximately US$26.8 million.
This province-wide expansion - the seventh Nortel Networks has provided for China Mobile in Shaanxi - will enhance network coverage in outlying areas, optimize performance, and support subscriber growth. The expansion is expected to include GSM radio access and core switching equipment in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province. This will position China Mobile to increase network capacity and deliver wireless data networking services - like location-based navigation and advertising, prepaid billing and virtual private networks (VPNs) - that can generate new revenues.
"We are extremely pleased and proud to have been chosen by China Mobile to implement all seven phases of its Shaanxi GSM network since 1995," said Robert Mao, president and chief executive officer, Nortel Networks China. "This is a strong vote of confidence in Nortel Networks ability to deliver customer satisfaction again and again, and clearly testifies to the quality, reliability and scalability of our wireless services and solutions."
The Xi'an GSM network upgrade will be implemented to provide a scalable, multi-processing solution that distributes call processing over multiple, independent processor elements in a shared-memory design. Nortel Networks GSM solutions are designed to create networking efficiencies across wireless, wireline, and packet-switched networks that can drive down the cost of network ownership for service providers.
Nortel Networks has won contracts to deploy 80 GSM/GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks in 41 countries. In China alone, Nortel Networks has won wireless contracts in 17 of the nation's 31 provinces.
Nortel Networks is an industry leader and innovator focused on transforming how the world communicates and exchanges information. The company is supplying its service provider and enterprise customers with communications technology and infrastructure to enable value-added IP data, voice and multimedia services spanning Metro and Enterprise Networks, Wireless Networks and Optical Networks.
