Nextel Selects Wireless Services Corporation to Support Inter-Carrier Text Messaging
Nextel Extends Capabilities of Existing Platform to Enhance Text Messaging Service
BELLEVUE, Wash. & RESTON, Va., Aug 2, 2002 - Nextel Communications, Inc.(NASDAQ:NXTL) today announced that Wireless
Services Corporation (WSC), a leading provider of wireless data communications solutions for mobile carriers, will serve as Nextel's network interoperability
provider, enabling Nextel customers to send and receive text messages to and from subscribers of other U.S. wireless carriers.
Selected in 2000 as the provider for Nextel's original two-way messaging service, WSC has scaled its platform to meet the growing demand for Nextel two-way
messaging. Using WSC's interoperability platform, Nextel customers can now send and receive text messages with subscribers of other major wireless
carriers.
Nextel has also leveraged WSC's platform to offer customers advanced features such as message confirmation, 500-character length messages, real-time
delivery status, spam control and user defined replies.
"Inter-carrier messaging offers a significant usability improvement for Nextel subscribers," said Blair Kutrow, Nextel vice president of product management.
"This is the premier messaging technology on the market, and it allows us to provide yet another differentiated service to our customers, who already enjoy the
uniqueness of services such as Nextel Direct Connect(R) and Nextel's all digital, 2.5G packet data network. With this enhancement, creating an inter-carrier
text message is as simple as placing a phone call from a Nextel phone."
"WSC continually strives to bring wireless carriers, like Nextel, new and innovative data messaging solutions to increase subscriber revenue. We are pleased to
be a partner with Nextel, adding to their portfolio of differentiated services," said Kevin McKeand, COO of WSC.
WSC is one of three designated Inter-carrier vendors (ICV) working with the CTIA inter-carrier messaging forum. In addition, WSC's Inter-Carrier Data
Messaging is the only commercially available, interoperable text messaging solution that resides within the carrier's network operations center to provide a highly
reliable, scalable and secure solution.
