interWAVE Extends Deployment of Prepaid GSM Voice Network for Mobile Operator in Northern Africa
MENLO PARK, Calif.--Jan. 22, 2002--Continuing to expand its footprint in Africa,
interWAVE(R) Communications (Nasdaq:IWAV), a pioneer in compact wireless voice communications systems and
broadband wireless data networks, today announced that it has initiated the second phase of a fully-functional, GSM cellular
network for Mattel, a subsidiary of Tunisia Telecom and a mobile operator in the Republic of Mauritania. The $1.6 million
dollar, second phase of the network includes increased capacity of the current infrastructure as well as the establishment of
coverage in new areas, including Tentane, Zouerate, Selibabi, Attar and Rosso. Completely prepaid, this network will provide
voice service to 50,000 subscribers.
"We are particularly pleased that Mattel has chosen to expand the second phase of its network with us, further validating
the flexibility and unique design of our network architecture," said Martin de la Serna, interWAVE's regional managing
director. "interWAVE's local switching and local billing capabilities were two of the major reasons that Mattel chose to
deploy our network, making it the ideal solution to meet Mattel's requirements for providing wireless communications."
Unlike traditional networks that utilize a central switch, interWAVE's unique technology switches local calls locally,
minimizing the costs associated with backhauling cellular traffic to Mauritian's capital city of Nouakchott. interWAVE's
point-to-point broadband solution will be utilized to backhaul local cellular traffic from the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) to
the Base Station Controller (BSC). Only long-distance calls are routed via satellite to the public telephone network in
Nouakchott, which greatly reduces the cost of the overall service. In addition, a prepaid system is incorporated into
interWAVE's Mobile Switching Center (MSC) for record data keeping, call tracking and detailed billing.
Due to the largely nomadic nature of those living in Mauritania, Mattel's future network plans include offering mobile
services, providing customers with a reliable and mobile communications service as they travel from one area to another.
