Samsung Mass-Produces Industry’s First 1Gb NAND Flash Memory Device Utilizing 0.12-Micron Process Technology

San Jose, Calif. – August 14, 2002 – Samsung Semiconductor, Inc., the world’s leading supplier of advanced semiconductor memory technology, today announced that it has commenced mass production of the industry’s first 1Gb NAND Flash memory device utilizing 0.12-micron process technology. This high-density non-volatile memory device supports increased memory capacity, allowing consumers to store larger amounts of data on their favorite handheld devices, such as digital cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and digital audio players.

Samsung is the industry’s leading volume supplier of NAND Flash memory. The new 1Gb device utilizes the industry’s most-advanced micron process technology and incorporates cell sizes smaller than 100 square nanometers, providing manufacturing efficiencies.

For faster performance, Samsung has incorporated an expanded page program of 2 kilobytes and a block erase function of 128 kilobytes. A write cache function is included for continuous page programming, resulting in a 70 percent increase in speed from previous NAND Flash memory devices.

Flash memory is the fastest growing segment of the semiconductor industry. According to Semico Research Corporation, the Flash memory market is expected to reach $2 billion this year and show an annual growth rate of 80 percent by 2004.

The addition of Samsung’s 1Gb Flash memory device adds to the company’s growing portfolio of NAND Flash solutions, and strengthens its commitment to developing Flash memory technology in a wide a range of configurations and densities.
