-- Expanding Traditional GIS Education, Leading Location-based Intelligence Company Delivers Software to Colleges and Universities throughout US and Canada TROY, N.Y., Aug 14, 2002 - MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS) today announced its software program for education, making its leading location-based intelligence solutions widely available and affordable to colleges and universities across the US and Canada. Designed to deliver MapInfo's intuitive and easy-to-learn software directly onto the desktops and laptops of more students and teachers, the program enables students across multiple fields of study to learn firsthand the value of location-based intelligence.

Classes with core GIS curriculums, such as earth sciences, geology and forestry, can now benefit from MapInfo's simple-to-use technology, enabling students to spend more time applying the technology to their classroom assignments and analyzing information, rather than grappling with how it works. In addition, schools will now have the ability to leverage location-based intelligence in their business, marketing and health and human services classes. Students utilizing MapInfo's products throughout these various disciplines will be able to incorporate these skills in their future research and professions.

Through this software program, MapInfo offers academic year licensing of its industry leading solutions to qualified professors and universities in order to provide students with a stronger working knowledge of location-based solutions and services. Institutions can select a desktop or developer's package to meet the needs of all audiences. Both packages can be purchased through a lab or classroom license, site or campus license or an enterprise license, which enables multiple campuses to utilize the technology. MapInfo Professional(R) for the desktop is also available as a single-seat license. Once an instructor selects the software package, MapInfo's core technologies will be available throughout the course of study to every registered student.

"The key today is to have students move beyond learning how to use GIS tools to actually applying them to solve problems," said Professor Eric Johnson of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. "MapInfo's program is an ideal way for them to discover how GIS and location-based intelligence technologies can help decision-making in a variety of disciplines. Using powerful commercial tools for analysis, students have the opportunity to learn innovative approaches to problem solving, giving them a head-start on their career paths."

"Applications of mapping and location-based intelligence technology are growing exponentially in business and government, and MapInfo is committed to providing students--our nation's future leaders and decision makers--with a strong working knowledge of location-based solutions and services," said Mike Hickey, COO of MapInfo. "MapInfo's software program for education prepares the next wave of professionals with greater software proficiency and expertise. Students will benefit from MapInfo's renowned ease of use and gain a broader understanding of location-based software across a wide range of industries."
