Public WiFi forecasted to grow better than 100%
Achieving mass
adoption will need to wait until after 2010
Mountain View - August 19, 2002 - InsightonWireless developed a Public WiFi
forecast by examining the history and market dynamics of cellular, cable and
ISP market adoption and by extrapolating the Public WiFi market driver
trends. The resulting forecast is realistically based on historical
perspective and the realities of an early market.
"Most new services from cellular, cable and ISP required at least 10 years
to reach 10% market penetration and 15-30 years to reach mass adoption of
25% penetration", states Andrew Luan, InsightonWireless Analyst. "Given
that Public WiFi shares similar underlying market drivers, its adoption
should happen in a similar timeframe."
The study examines different scenarios for market adoption based on
different assumptions of market drivers' trends. Market drivers
extrapolated include:
· end-user cost,
· service-pricing,
· deployment cost,
· compelling applications,
· industry standards and structure,
· social trends, and
· government policy.
It gives a year-by-year account from 2003 to 2010 of the industry
development leading up to mass adoption.
