SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Jan. 24, 2002--
3Com's New 802.11b Products Boost Mobility and Wireless Security and New Webcache Software Brings Content
Closer to Users for Faster
Response
At its 3Com North America Focus Partner Conference in Las Vegas today, 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS)
announced new wireless LAN products, as well as new enhancements for the SuperStack(R) 3 Webcache product family,
reaffirming its strategy focused on delivering industry-leading solutions for enterprises. Partnering with the industry's best
channel partners, 3Com is leading the way in delivering advanced resiliency and secure access throughout customers'
networks. 3Com combines advanced functionality on scalable infrastructure with affordable, easy-to-use products to drive
down total cost of ownership.
"Winning in the enterprise is a top priority for 3Com," said Patrick Guay, vice president and general manager, LAN
Infrastructure Division, 3Com's Business Networks Company. "3Com's unique approach of engineering innovative, rich
networking features, while delivering easy-of-use and affordable solutions, stands out exceptionally well, especially when our
customers are required to do more with fewer resources. Given today's networking and business demands, great
opportunities exist for our channel partners in the enterprise market."
The new wireless LAN products are the Access Point 8000 and the Access Point 2000. 3Com now offers customers of
all sizes the widest range of wireless solutions, designed for the most simple to the most sophisticated or complex LAN
infrastructure. 3Com ensures standards-based Wi-Fi compatibility with the right feature set and at the right price.
3Com's portfolio of wireless LAN infrastructure products now includes:
--
3Com(R)11Mbps Wireless LAN Access Point 8000 for larger networks with a high level of scalable security
capabilities,
--
3Com 11Mbps Wireless LAN Access Point 6000, originally launched in early 2001, for organizations that have limited
IT staff,
--
3Com 11Mbps Wireless LAN Access Point 2000 for simple and affordable installation in, for example, remote branch
offices,
--
3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Building-to-Building Bridge for connecting hard-to-wire sites, multiple buildings within a
campus setting or temporary networks to the LAN, and
--
3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Workgroup Bridge for wired-to-wireless bridging of any Ethernet-enabled device to
any Wi-Fi certified wireless LAN infrastructure.
--
As previously announced, 3Com plans to offer 5 GHz wireless LAN solutions based on the IEEE 802.11a specification
with products expected to become available worldwide in 2002.
--
3Com's variety of wireless LAN PC Cards for all sizes of business
The Access Point 8000 is fully compatible with 3Com's existing AirConnect(R) 11 Mbps Wireless LAN product and all
other 3Com wireless LAN products. Customers can easily migrate as new access points are required in their wireless
network. The Access Point 2000 can be set up in 60 seconds - by simply plugging the access point into a power source and
the wired LAN; users are ready to enjoy reliable wireless connections.
The Access Point 8000 offers a full-featured security solution for the enterprise network with support for 40-bit WEP and
128-bit shared key encryption, IEEE 802.1x, RADIUS authentication, and Extensible Authentication Protocols (EAP). In
addition to support of Windows XP, 3Com's unique 802.1x agent extends RADIUS/802.1x capabilities to legacy Windows
OS.
For organizations without a RADIUS server but which support a large user base, 3Com's Access Point 8000, when
deployed with the 3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card with XJACK(R) antenna, offers Dynamic Security Link. This
added security feature - also available on the Access Point 6000 - gives each user a unique key and changes the key with
every session, making it a resilient security solution. Each Access Point 8000 can support up to 1,000 usernames and
passwords.
In preparation for successful wireless network implementations, customers are invited to take advantage of the online
Wireless Site Survey to match requirements with solutions. The survey is available at the following URL:

Enhancements for Webcache to Speed Up Content Delivery
The new Version 2.0 software for the 3Com SuperStack 3 Webcache product family increases performance and
scalability of the 3Com caching solution, technology delivering up to 50% reductions in WAN Web traffic and associated
costs while significantly speeding Web content delivery.
Often used together with 3Com's SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 family because of the switch's webcache redirect and polling
features, the SuperStack 3 Webcache products are designed for enterprise or school environments with 30 to 1,500+ users
and moderate-to-high Web access or dependence on Web-based applications. Fault-tolerant design improves system
reliability, and cache engine bypass ensures network resilience under extreme load conditions.
Top Channel Partner Conference With High Expectations
This week, 3Com is hosting the "3Com North America Focus Partner Conference 2002" in Las Vegas, bringing the
company's Gold and Silver partners - particularly those focused on system and enterprise opportunities - together with 3Com
executives and product specialists to collaborate on the most effective strategies to be successful in the enterprise market. The
conference is intended to be an opportunity for partners to learn exclusively about 3Com's exciting future product roadmaps
for switching, voice and wireless products, giving them the ability to create innovative solutions for enterprise networks in the
coming years.
In addition, 3Com is helping its partners, who are 3Com's sole route to market, to better meet customers' networking
requirements today, simply and cost effectively, using 3Com's LAN switching, wireless LAN, networked telephony and Web
solutions. Easily connected to the SuperStack 3 switch-based network, 3Com's wireless access points extend the reach of
the wired network to support mobile users for a variety of business applications, such as wireless information-gathering and
location-independent communication.
At the conference, all the partners will hear about 3Com's strategies for improving security for network assets and users;
optimizing scalability and resilience of high-performance network infrastructures; speeding delivery of content to users;
supporting an increasing mobile community, and enhancing communications between users. Conference sessions have been
designed to help 3Com's partners ensure that they are leveraging the benefits and opportunities afforded through the
well-received Focus Partner Program.
