VIRTUAL WAVE AND AIRBIQUITY OFFERING WIRELESS LOCATION-BASED SERVICES THROUGH ROADSTAR GPS
Monthly Service Plans Start at $6.95
OTTAWA and SEATTLE – (September 17, 2002) – Virtual Wave has selected the GPS Accessory by Airbiquity for the delivery of its RoadStar GPS wireless location-based services. Now with the push of a button, consumers across North America can have access to roadside assistance, trip planning, reservation services, location-based directory assistance (L-411), short messaging (SMS), e-mail and turn-by-turn navigation based on the caller’s GPS-pinpointed location.
The GPS Accessory is a battery attachment that is compatible with over 30 different Nokia-brand phone models. The device allows users to “fix” their position via satellite with the push of a button, and send the location data over the wireless voice channel to RoadStar GPS’s call center. Because the service is cell-phone based rather than vehicle-based, subscribers can access RoadStar GPS from virtually any outdoor location – the roadside, a city sidewalk or a hiking trail.
“The GPS Accessory offers the most economical, convenient way to deliver location based services to consumers, wherever they roam,” said George Naspo, vice president of sales and business development for Airbiquity. “The device and RoadStar GPS service work with phones made by Nokia, the No. 1 handset manufacturer worldwide. And, because it is compatible with all wireless voice networks, no new cell phone service contracts are needed -- customers can stay with the wireless carriers and calling plans that they trust.”
The RoadStar GPS service is available in three packages and price levels: RoadStar Basic for $6.95 per month, RoadStar SMS for $3.95 per month, and RoadStar Deluxe for $17.95 per month. (More details on price and service offerings is available on Virtual Wave’s Web site www.roadstargps.com.)
“This affordable, snap-on GPS technology is perfectly suited for today’s mobile lifestyle,” said Rob Ireland, president and CEO of Virtual Wave. “We are confident that the market for these services will continue to grow and are looking forward to adding location based gaming and ASP services to the RoadStar GPS service in the near future.”
