URL(s): www.birdstep.com
Oslo/Seattle - September 23, 2002 - Birdstep Technology today introduced IP
Zone Server 1.5, the latest version of its wireless access software suite.
Available for the first time in the U.S. market, this new version offers
improved security and intrusion detection, rapid hot spot deployment through
automatic installation and integrated support for seamless mobility between
wireless LAN zones and cellular networks.
"With security a major concern when choosing a wireless solution, Birdstep
has taken steps to ensure users have secure and scalable wireless access to
information and services," said Stefano Holguin, wireless product manager of
Birdstep Technology. "Our wireless access software has been implemented by
major operators and service providers such as Telenor Mobile, Telenor
Business Solutions and others with great success."
According to research firm In-Stat/MDR, the number of locations available
for public access (hot spots) is estimated to grow worldwide from 2,000 in
2001 to 42,000 in 2006 with service revenues recognizing a corresponding
growth, reaching $642.6 million in 2006, up from $11.3 million in 2001.
Birdstep's wireless access software suite is a platform-independent family
of products for implementing wireless IP Zones or hot spots. At the core of
the suite is IP Zone Server software, which is designed for public
WLAN/Bluetooth access areas and provides cross platform authentication so
any terminal with wireless connection and a web browser can get access.
Other elements include the Nomadic Portal, for device-independent
publication of local information by means of XML-structured content, and the
Billing Gateway, for implementing various billing methods.
Birdstep's IP Zone software supports high-speed access to information and
services for users of PDAs, laptops and mobile phones. Secure and continuous
connectivity between WLAN Zones and GSM/GPRS networks is achieved through
the integrated support for Mobile IP client software, an application that
allows users to seamlessly connect and re-connect across different types of
infrastructures without application downtime or user intervention. The MIP
client software is another independent product offered by Birdstep.
This new version also provides SNMP support and integration with leading
systems management tools and improved content distribution with added
support for BEA Web Logic.
Birdstep Technology was founded in Oslo, Norway in 1996 and is traded on the
Oslo Stock Exchange (OSE) under ticker "BIRD". The company has approximately
80 employees in Oslo and Seattle. Birdstep's small footprint, high
performance database technologies combined with its wireless roaming and
access software enables companies to build innovative solutions for embedded
systems and the Mobile Internet. Birdstep makes your information accessible
anytime, anywhere, on any device and on any infrastructure. For more
