DEMOmobile 2002 Unwires the Planet
-- Thirty-Four Product Debuts Foretell the Future of Wireless
LA JOLLA, Calif., Sep 19, 2002 - DEMOmobile 2002 began today by delving into the central issue determining the success of
mobile computing: the creation of a universal wireless network. The two-day conference, produced by IDG Executive Forums, opened to an influential
audience of technology executives, venture investors, business development executives and leading influencers. In addition to addressing the issues currently
hindering an "unwired planet," the morning session was also highlighted by key announcements from:
-- Vocera Communications, which announced the Vocera Communications
System, combining voice recognition software and Voice-over-IP on
802.11b networks to create a unique communications system, possibly
replacing paging and walkie-talkie systems in environments such as
hospitals where instant communications among mobile personnel is
critical;
-- Microsoft, which showed its Windows Powered Smart Displays, portable
wireless LCD monitors that link wirelessly to Windows XP-based PCs.
This product represents a fundamental shift from an individual
computing experience to a social computing paradigm; and
-- Sorrent, developer of the Convergence Everywhere Live Platform, upon
which new and exciting games can be built for mobile devices. The
company showed On-Field Live Football, a multi-player or solo game
enriched with 3D animation and fast game play.
"Wireless computing and communications power is integrated into every conceivable form factor and is, without a doubt, the technology of the 21st century,"
said Chris Shipley, executive producer of the DEMO Conferences. "DEMOmobile 2002 aims to highlight those companies that are effectively harnessing
wireless technology and progressing toward an unwired planet."
The program underscored developments that will transform personal computing into a device computing paradigm. "The building blocks of device computing are
falling into place. From the devices and applications, to the component technology and middleware that makes it all work, we have achieved a critical mass that
enables this new computing model," Shipley said in the conference's opening remarks. To highlight this transformation, the program sessions explored:
-- strides made in user interface technology in mobile device designs and
software. New products from Logitech, Tcom International, Pen&Internet,
and IBM Pervasive Computing Division emphasized that new form factors
and data types will lead the way in making mobile products easier to
use.
-- emerging core technologies that enable more compact product designs,
secure transactions, and improved data input. Tessera Technologies,
I-Control, and Canesta all demonstrated chip-level products that are
providing new functionality to mobile devices.
"Where 'mobile' computing once described the transportability of a computing environment from place to place, the term now more aptly defines a state of
being. We are on the move, yet in need of constant access to the information and services that support our work, and-increasingly-our leisure," continued
Shipley. "The foundations for continuous computing are being laid down: pervasive and interconnected communications networks; lightweight, low-power,
durable component designs; and core technologies at every layer of the application stack. As these building blocks fall into place, new and compelling
applications are developing to realize the next generation of personal computing."
DEMOmobile producers Chris Shipley and Amy Francetic screen the most promising new companies to select the most significant, market-disrupting products.
The DEMOmobile conference has served as the launch pad for products such as the Palm VII, IBM Thinkpad Wireless Solutions, Microsoft Windows
Powered Pocket PC and the HP Jordana 720 Handheld PC.
Sponsor Set
Sponsors of DEMOmobile 2002 are IBM, Sony, Sprint, Logitech, Fierce Wireless, and SVASE.
About the DEMO Conferences
The annual DEMO and DEMOmobile conferences focus on emerging technologies and new products, which are hand-selected by executive producer Chris
Shipley from across the spectrum of the personal technology marketplace. Top executives from the leading hardware and software technology companies,
venture capitalists, journalists from key industry publications and industry analysts attend the DEMO and DEMOmobile conferences to preview the most
promising products and technologies for the coming year. DEMO is held in February each year and features approximately 60 new companies, products and
technologies. For more information, visit http://www.idgef.com/ . DEMOmobile is held each fall and features approximately 30 new mobile technologies. For
more information, visit http://www.idgef.com/demomobile/index.html .
The DEMO community also benefits from the award winning DEMOletter(R) monthly and DEMOletter Weekly Edition(R) newsletters. Designed to reach the
people who are creating companies, building products and launching new ideas, DEMOletter provides smart insight and analysis of entrepreneurial business
issues.
