Insignia offers high performance Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) environment for Microsoft(r)'s Smartphone 2002 platform

Fremont, CA, - September 23, 2002 -Insignia Solutions (Nasdaq: INSG) announced today that Sendo has licensed the new Insignia Mobile Foundation to be used in the Z100 Multimedia Smartphone, its new Microsoft Smartphone 2002-based phone. The Sendo Z100 Smartphone will be introduced in Europe shortly with the US and Asia following soon.

Insignia's mobile handset provisioning infrastructure software will enable Sendo mobile phones to download and run Java(tm) 2, Micro Edition (J2ME(tm))-based mobile services, including games, mobile commerce, business to business applications, email and personal management software with high performance and extended battery life. Java technology has been embraced by almost every major wireless carrier worldwide and a vast array of mobile services infrastructure has been designed around it. Insignia's software provides the opportunity to leverage the Java developer and mobile services base, and to combine it with the new .NET capabilities from Microsoft.

"Insignia's Mobile Foundation is fully optimized for Microsoft platforms and we are impressed by Insignia's fast integration of their software in our Z100 Smartphone," said Susan Macke, Sendo's VP of Smartphones. "It fulfils the requirements of our customers, the wireless carriers, while not delaying our time to market. Since we expect that the majority of our future phones will include Java enabling software, we are pleased to have been able to reach an agreement with Insignia."

Sendo's Z100 Multimedia Smartphone is a GPRS tri-band smartphone. With a sleek and lightweight design and a TFT display with up to 65,000 colors, comparable in quality to a high-end laptop display, the Z100 Smartphone will be one of the first color smartphones that gives users access to e-mail, contacts and meaningful Internet content on the go. It incorporates the new Microsoft(r) Windows(r) Powered Smartphone 2002 software. Applications currently being developed by third party developers for the Sendo Z100 Smartphone range from well-known games such as Midway's smash hit arcade classic 'Defender(tm)' to business applications like Word, PowerPoint and Excel viewers.

"This new relationship with Sendo reinforces Insignia's position as an essential ingredient in the emerging mobile market," said Mark McMillan, president of Insignia, "It's a clear message from the market that our new software technology will have a profound impact on second generation Java technology-enabled mobile devices."

The combined PDA, smartphone, and mobile handset segment is the fastest growing market for smart devices. Last year in Japan alone, over 10 million users switched to Java-enabled phones to access a variety of sophisticated services, from location-based travel assistance to interactive entertainment. The latest ARC Group market research study highlights that all mobile handsets will be Java-enabled within five years. This study estimates that 1.1 billion will be capable of running Java applications by 2006.
