Intermec's New 700 Color Pocket PC 2002 Handheld Computer Shipping Now
EVERETT, Wash., Sep 25, 2002 - Intermec Technologies Corp.:
-- Designed from ground up for serious enterprise mobility
-- Survives five-foot drops to concrete
-- IP64 sealed Pocket PC mobile computer
-- Integrates up to three wireless communications options at once
-- First to market with Intel X-Scale 400 MHz processor in a
rugged device
Intermec Technologies Corp. this week began shipping its eagerly awaited 700 Series Color mobile computer, the latest member of a product family already
known worldwide for its industry "firsts."
The 700 Series Color builds on the technology innovations designed into the entire 700 Series that allow companies to communicate freely, increasing the
amount of real-time information available throughout their operations -- important because more timely, accurate information means better business decisions.
The 700 Series is the first family of Pocket PC mobile computers designed specifically for serious enterprise mobility. It already has become a favorite with
workers whose daily shifts require powerful, reliable and easy-to-use handheld computers that can take the abuse of industrial, mobile and retail environments.
The new 700 Color model adds a large, brilliant color display, combined with the power and speed of Intel Corp.'s 400 MHz X-Scale processor to increase
the flexibility and functionality of the original 700 Series.
The 700 Color is the first enterprise Pocket PC to offer an imager, suitable for reading barcodes (including 2D symbologies), taking photographs and
capturing signatures. The 700 Color also is first to integrate up to three wireless communication options in a single device, including a wireless local area
(802.11b) radio, a GSM/GPRS wide area network radio and a fully integrated power-managed Bluetooth(TM) radio. With the unmatched range of
communications options and the durability to withstand repeated 5-foot drops to concrete, the 700 Color is designed to handle the challenges of real-time
daily work, whether on a route or in the field.
The 700 Color with 802.11b wireless LAN and Bluetooth radios are available now for immediate delivery. Versions with GSM/GPRS or CDMA/1xRTT
wide-area radios will be available in Q4 2002.
"Intermec is committed to empowering mobile workers," said Intermec Vice President Mike Colwell. "Such eager early market acceptance of the 700 Series
reflects the single-minded focus we share with our customers: increased efficiency and rapid bottom line return on their technology investment."
About the 700 Series Color
The 700 Color features a Reflective TFT display that provides superior clarity and vivid contrast under all lighting conditions, both indoors and out. The
3.8-inch (97 mm) (diagonal) display is 20% larger than most other devices on the market for better viewability. From simple highlighting of data entry fields to
presentation of full-motion video, the color display helps users work more efficiently.
The 700 Color is designed to change along with a customer's business. The power of Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC, combined with the performance of
Intel's X-Scale technology, ensure the capacity to add more applications or to use the device to support multiple job functions. The 700 Color is designed to
be a business partner for the long haul, accommodating today's ever-changing mobile computing requirements.
"We chose X-Scale specifically for its ability to dynamically set clock speeds to match performance to application demands," said Craig Miller, Intermec's 700
Series product manager. "X-Scale offers an excellent balance of power conservation and computing power that can support even our most demanding
wireless, bar code scanning and full-motion video applications."
Intermec is known worldwide for its ability to build computers that stand up to the most rugged use, and the 700 Color carries on this proud tradition.
Designed from the ground up for use in harsh environments, the 700 Color withstands multiple 5-ft. (1.5 m) drops to concrete and is sealed against rain and
dust to IP64 standards. The ergonomic case design is sculpted and balanced for user comfort in long-term use; radio and scanner options are integrated, not
add-ons, which means they are tested to the same ruggedness standards.
The wide range of communication options on the 700 Series provide wired and wireless connectivity options that are unmatched in the industry. On-board
wired Ethernet is standard, and true Ethernet speeds are maintained all the way to the device. Other radio options include:
-- Wireless Local Area Network (LAN) Integrated into the 700
Series, this 802.11b radio option provides up to 11 Mb/sec
throughput
-- Wireless Wide Area Network (WAN) Integrated options include
radios for GSM/GPRS and CDMA/1xRTT networks
-- Bluetooth Personal Area Networking Allows cable-free
communications with peripheral devices such as printers over a
10-meter range.
For applications that require wireless connectivity in multiple environments, the 700 Color can be configured with up to three radio options in the same
device. For example, a worker may spend part of his or her day on premise using LAN access points to operate applications for cross docking or load
planning. The same device also could use a WAN network when taken off-premise in a delivery vehicle, covering a much larger area, all the while using
Bluetooth-compatible wireless communications to print.
Offering a broad choice of scanning options, the 700 Color is available with linear imaging or laser scanning technologies. The 2D-imager option reads
two-dimensional matrix codes, as well as omnidirectional 1D bar codes. The 2D imager also can take black and white photographs for applications such as
proof of delivery, market surveys or field inspections. Linear 1D and PDF417 laser scanners complete the scanning lineup.
The frontlight for the color display and a multitude of radios can tax the power budget of any portable device. To ensure trouble-free operation and maximum
uptime throughout the day, the 700 Color comes equipped with a powerful 14.4 watt-hour lithium-ion battery. The 700 Color leads the industry in power
management, with up to 14 hours of operation between rechargings. In addition, the built-in Flash ROM folder allows permanent storage of applications,
drivers and start-up files on non-volatile flash memory.
