m-Qube, CambridgeSide Galleria and Cingular debut "SmartMobile Shopper" Program
Shoppers use their cellular phones to get instant mobile offers for mall stores
BOSTON, October 1, 2002 -- m-Qube, a leading U.S. mobile marketing management company and CambridgeSide Galleria, a shopping mall based in Cambridge Mass, have launched a service that enables shoppers to use their cellular phones to get instant coupons for CambridgeSide Galleria stores. "SmartMobile Shopper," sponsored by Cingular, pioneers a new approach to consumer marketing by using wireless to directly target interested shoppers.
By dialing an 800 number and choosing from menu options, shoppers carrying an SMS-capable cellular phone can get a message back within seconds that contains a code good for a store coupon. Over time, shoppers will be offered three options: to enroll in the program as a new user, to get today's special offers from mall retailers, or to enter a specific four-digit store code for offers from a specific retailer. Subscribers from any wireless carrier can participate if they have a SMS capable phone.
Issie Shait, vice president of the CambridgeSide Galleria, which has 112 stores and 15 million visitors each year said, "We're thrilled to be working with m-Qube and introducing this ground-breaking technology to the U.S. market. We are excited about directly targeting interested shoppers and providing them with offers that are of value to them."
Mike Troiano, senior vice president of business development for m-Qube says, "This promotion is appealing to mall and store managers because they can develop valuable demographic information about who is shopping where and what they like to buy. Retailers are realizing that mobile marketing offers an extremely high return on investment and a much better picture of which media outlets are bringing in which kinds of consumers."
A text message is a short note, up to 160 characters in length, sent to a mobile phone. Text messaging works much like e-mail, with users able to store received messages in an Inbox accessible through their phones, review them at a later time, and delete them at will.
Text messaging is expanding rapidly in the United States right now, particularly among the teens and young adults at the "sweet spot" of mall retailers target audience. Today more than 1 Billion messages are sent every month in the U.S. In Europe where the phenomenon first took hold, an estimated 1 Billion messages are now sent every day.
The opportunities presented by this new medium are significant for marketers. Conservative estimates are that mobile marketing spending by brands looking to capitalize on the first truly "out-of-home" direct response medium will pass the $5 Billion/year mark within the next few years
