InPhonic Teams with Southern LINC to offer Wireless E-mail
-- InPhonic's e-mail platform allows regional carrier to expand its My LINC wireless Internet offering to include real-time access to more information
WASHINGTON, Oct 1, 2002 - InPhonic Inc., a leading provider of communications software and services, today
announced that it has licensed its wireless e-mail access solution to Southern LINC, the wireless communications subsidiary of Southern Company
(NYSE:SO).
With InPhonic's solution, Southern LINC's customers can access e-mail, calendar and contacts in real-time from their wireless handsets. Southern
LINC will market the expanded offering as My LINC Office, available for commercial use in the fourth quarter 2002.
Under the agreement, InPhonic will integrate its Wireless Gateway into Southern LINC's My LINC Wireless Internet Service, allowing Southern
LINC customers to access their existing e-mail applications from their wireless handsets.
This includes the ability to manage the calendar and contacts functions in real-time from the handset. The wireless e-mail feature will appear on the
home page of My LINC, a service that uses the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) to give customers access to Web sites specially formatted
for viewing on handheld devices.
With an easy-to-navigate Web-based provisioning tool created by InPhonic, My LINC Office customers can quickly configure and manage up to
five separate e-mail boxes by entering basic information into the My LINC Office web pages.
In addition to cellular phones, InPhonic's technology works on most popular wireless devices such as PDAs and other handheld computers and
supports all of the major Web-based and corporate e-mail platforms including POP3, Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes.
"As a regional wireless carrier with a focus on mobile businesses, Southern LINC recognizes our customers' need to access as much information as
possible while in the field," said Bob Dawson, President and CEO of Southern LINC. "With My LINC Office, we will provide a practical wireless
application that business professionals can utilize and rely on every day."
"InPhonic is working hard to boost the adoption and acceptance of advanced wireless communication applications in the enterprise today," said
InPhonic founder and CEO David Steinberg. "We are pleased to work with leading mobile operators like Southern LINC to help extend critical
business information to the enterprise."
