MapInfo Allows Users to Rapidly Develop and Deploy Location-based Applications based on the Microsoft .NET Framework

TROY, NEW YORK, Oct 7, 2002 - MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS) today announced its support for
Microsoft .NET technologies. Using MapInfo's technology with Microsoft .NET will enable companies to more easily and cost-effectively deploy
location-based applications and Web services.
MapInfo's Windows-based products including MapInfo Professional(R), MapInfo MapX(R), MapInfo MapX(R) Mobile and MapInfo(R)
MapXtreme(R) will fully support the Microsoft .NET Framework by early 2003, allowing developers to quickly and easily incorporate cutting-edge
location-based technology into their applications and services. For the first time, a programmer using MapInfo products who is able to write desktop
applications can write Web applications with no additional languages or API's to learn. This dramatically reduces time to market and decreases upfront
costs. MapInfo's new architecture built for the Microsoft .NET Framework will reduce ramp up time, and allow customers to focus on their business
needs instead of spending time learning mapping technology, maximizing their return on investment.
"Some customers are moving to Microsoft .NET technologies and MapInfo is fully committed to providing its customers with the best technology that
meets their business needs," said Michael Hickey, COO, MapInfo. "MapInfo's full support of the Microsoft .NET Framework will enable developers to
leverage their existing skill sets and IT investments to create cutting-edge location-based Web services and applications."
"Microsoft is delighted that MapInfo is supporting Visual Studio ..NET and the .NET Framework, as location-based intelligence is an important
aspect of business applications," said Richard Burte, product manager for the Developer Platform and Evangelism Division at Microsoft Corp. "By
developing on the .NET Framework, and using MapInfo's technology, companies will be able to easily and cost-effectively build and deploy
location-based applications and Web services."
MapInfo's products leverage the power of Microsoft Visual Studio ..NET, a comprehensive tool set for rapidly building applications that integrate XML
Web services, Microsoft Windows-based applications and Web solutions. Developers can create powerful applications fast and effectively that span
any platform or device. Any developer who is familiar with Visual Studio .NET will be able to take advantage of MapInfo's products in the language of
their choice. Additionally, customers will be able to leverage the popular programming environment and languages they already know instead of being
locked into proprietary scripting languages.
"MapInfo's compatibility with the Microsoft .NET Framework makes it easier than ever to add location-based intelligence to our engineering
applications," said Daniel Broyles, senior network engineer, Network Engineering Systems at Sprint PCS. "We are currently developing an RF
forecasting and planning tool using the .NET Framework and MapInfo MapX, and are thrilled that we will be able to add this kind of mapping
functionality while leveraging the .NET Framework."
Availability
MapInfo expects to release its first product offering based on Microsoft .NET technologies in early 2003.
