New Wireless Software From Onset Gives Handheld Users Access to Corporate Information Systems

GetData(TM) Software Provides BlackBerry Users a Wireless Link to Enterprise Data Resources Using Secure Email Transport Without a Web Browser

MICROSOFT EXCHANGE CONFERENCE (MEC), ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct 7, 2002 -- Onset Technology, a leading developer of mobile enterprise software, has introduced new client-server software that makes it possible for handheld users to access and retrieve data directly from corporate information sources without the need for a wireless Web browser. The software, GetData, is a module of Onset's popular METAmessage(R) for Wireless application. Initially, GetData will be available for BlackBerry(TM), with support for the Palm and PocketPC devices later this year.

GetData uses a unique forms-based approach to let handheld users interact rapidly with a range of corporate data sources such as SQL/ODBC databases, Web services, and CRM/ERP applications. The user opens a custom form, easily created by a corporate system administrator, and either requests information from or adds information to the data source.

"If organizations are to adopt wireless applications across the enterprise, then users need access to more than just email," said Donald Longueil, wireless industry analyst for In-Stat/MDR. "GetData is the type of solution corporate handheld users have been waiting for. It allows field reps to retrieve pricing and place orders, service teams to check parts availability, and lawyers to search and retrieve specific documents on their handheld."

Rapid, Forms-Based Queries via Email

What separates GetData from other wireless Web software is its ability to query data sources without the use of a Web browser. With a typically sluggish browser, a user must launch the browser application, logon, and navigate through complex page structures to find the right database link. If at any point the wireless connection drops, the user must start over. With GetData, the user selects a customized query form created by the system administrator, enters the request, and submits it to the METAmessage Conversion Server with one click. The server then queries the data source and replies to the user. Since the wireless connection uses email protocol, it is extremely fast and has no risk of losing data if the quality of the wireless connection fluctuates. And, the data from the query is stored on the wireless device rather than temporarily presented as a page.

Any number of custom forms can be created by the system administrator using a form designer, which is part of the GetData module. After designing a form, the administrator can test it on the data source, and then distribute the form to target handheld users via email. When a user opens an email message containing a form, the form automatically loads onto the METAmessage client software installed on the handheld. Later, if a form needs to be updated, the administrator can transmit revised forms wirelessly.

GetData Offers Additional Level of Message Encryption

Queries and results transmitted via GetData are also protected by an increased level of data security. The software allows the administrator to decide whether a form is confidential and requires added encryption. Each GetData request is encrypted with a different key to prevent unauthorized use of the message data. The server then returns encrypted results in a reply message, which is decrypted before presenting to the user.

METAmessage for Wireless is a modular, open architecture software solution designed especially for enterprise implementations of handheld devices. Network administrators can start with one module and easily add others as needs change. Other METAmessage modules include AttachmentsPlus(TM), which enables users to read and print email attachments and Web pages; RemoteLock(TM), which allows users to remotely shut down their devices in case of loss or theft; and, GetFile(TM), which provides remote access to files located on corporate networks. GetData for METAmessage is available now. For pricing information, contact Onset sales at (877) 847-8329.

About Onset Technology

Founded in 1997, Onset Technology is the developer of METAmessage(R) for Wireless -- a suite of unique software solutions that give business users access to virtually any data on their enterprise network using just a wireless email device such as RIM's BlackBerry handheld. METAmessage lets remote users read and print email attachments and Web pages; access the Web without a browser; read, print, and send network files from their handheld; and, interact with corporate data sources such as ERP and CRM applications. The software is broadly compatible with virtually all wireless devices and servers including those from strategic partners HP/Compaq, Microsoft, and RIM. Since its introduction last year, METAmessage has been widely adopted by a diverse group of Fortune 1000 companies, government agencies, and a range of large service organizations.
