QUALCOMM Supports California Technology Development Efforts in Europe
...as
Sponsor of Seventh Annual California Information Technology Partnering and
Investment Forum
- Exclusive Cal-IT Forum Showcases California Companies
to European Community -
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 22 -
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code
Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology today announced
its sponsorship and participation in the Seventh Annual California Information
Technology Partnering and Investment (Cal-IT) Forum being held Oct. 21-22 in
London. Organized by the State of California's Technology, Trade and Commerce
Agency (CTTCA), the Cal-IT Forum provides delegates from Europe's technology
and investment community with an inside look at the state's young technology
companies, as well as offering insights from major California-based companies
who are shaping the technology sector. As a gold sponsor of the event,
QUALCOMM is proud to support the state's efforts to extend California
technology to the global marketplace.
"In today's economy, the importance of a global presence for California's
technology companies is greater than ever before," said Peggy Johnson,
president and general manager of QUALCOMM Internet Services (QIS), the
division of QUALCOMM responsible for the BREW(TM) solution for wireless
applications. "By supporting the Cal-IT Forum, QUALCOMM hopes to encourage
success for start-up companies within the state and contribute to the overall
health of the state's technology community."
QUALCOMM executives will participate in several sessions during the
conference. Johnson will provide the keynote address titled "Customizing the
Wireless World" on Tuesday, Oct. 22. As part of her speech, Johnson will
discuss the evolution of wireless handsets from voice-only handsets to
integrated voice/data devices. She will cover many of the concerns faced by
members of the value chain in delivering compelling data services, and will
touch on how the BREW solution is addressing many of these obstacles and
issues.
On the evening of Oct. 22, Johnson will join Chris Cassapakis, senior
director of business development for QIS, in leading a panel titled "The Road
to Profit is Paved with Data Revenue." QUALCOMM will be joined by
representatives of several companies, including IBM, Insignia Solutions,
Verizon Wireless and JAMDAT Mobile, in discussing the future of wireless data
services. The panel will focus on the status of the wireless industry in
Europe and the United States, looking ahead to 2003 and beyond. Panelists
will highlight some of the key issues and trends in the mobile marketplace,
such as successful applications, value-added services and open and flexible
data communication standards.
Amy Mokady, director of business development for QIS in Europe, will
participate in two panel sessions during the forum. Mokady will moderate a
panel titled "Wireless Technology Trends" on Monday, Oct. 21, and will
participate in a panel titled "First Year in Europe" on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
As part of the sessions, QUALCOMM will showcase its BREW solution.
QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that
provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform
is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications
development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and
payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(TM) (software
development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting
tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is
controlled and managed by carriers -- enabling them to easily get applications
from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process.
Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their
handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application
download server. The BREW platform is a product of QIS, a division within the
QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet (QWI) Group of QUALCOMM Incorporated.
Deployments of the BREW solution continue as carriers throughout the world
join Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in Korea and KDDI
in Japan in commercializing BREW-based services. U.S. Cellular has launched a
BREW user trial, and China Unicom announced its plans to launch BREW-based
services in China. Globally, 16 carriers to date have indicated support for
the BREW solution. Twenty-four BREW-enabled handsets are already available to
consumers worldwide, and more than 2.5 million BREW-enabled phones have been
activated by end users since November 2001.
QUALCOMM Incorporated ( www.qualcomm.com ) is a leader in developing and
delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services
based on the Company's CDMA digital technology. Headquartered in San Diego,
Calif., QUALCOMM is included in the S&P 500 Index and traded on The Nasdaq
Stock Market(R) under the ticker symbol QCOM.
