Metrowerks and Borland Announce Commitment to Nokia’s Series 60 Smartphone Platform
New Series 60 Developer Toolkits to Reach Market This Year
MUNICH, November 5, 2002 – Nokia (NYSE: NOK), the global leader in mobile communications, today announced that support for the Nokia Series 60 platform will be included in mobile application development tools from industry leaders Borland and Metrowerks. The new developer tools, expected to be available before year-end, will further enhance the Series 60’s position as the leading global platform for multi-media mobile services.
The Borland and Metrowerks tools, announced here at the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference, November 5th and 6th, are designed to increase the speed, efficiency and quality with which developers can create applications for the color screen Symbian Operating System (OS) - Symbian OS™ based Series 60, which Nokia, Siemens, Samsung and Matsushita already support.
A sister product to Borland’s JBuilder MobileSet, the Borland Series 60 C++ Toolkit was jointly developed with Nokia. It enables the reuse of existing Symbian application source code or the creation of new Series 60 applications and testing and debugging of applications within a Series 60 emulator.
"Borland has selected Series 60 platform as the first mobile OS to be supported by Borland C++ Mobile Edition,” said Simon Thornhill, vice president and general manager of Borland RAD solutions. “The Nokia Series 60 C++ Toolkit extends Borland leadership in the provision of application development environments for mobile," Mr. Thornhill added. "By providing developers with an integrated development environment that directly supports the Series 60 platform Borland will increase the speed of mobile application development."
Metrowerks’ CodeWarrior(TM) Development Tools for Symbian OS, Professional Edition is a complete, integrated development environment that enables developers to develop, debug and compile C/C++ Symbian applications for Series 60 and other Symbian user interface packages. The toolkit offers timesaving remote debugging with a MetroTRK (Target Resident Kernel) feature, as well as a completely integrated Symbian target build environment.
“Series 60 is the most significant platform in the smart phone marketplace today,” said David Clifton, vice president of segment marketing, Metrowerks. “Adding support for the Series 60 is a key element in our strategy to provide the most comprehensive development tools for Symbian OS to application developers.”
The Series 60 platform supports open and common key technologies, such as MMS, Java (TM), WAP/XHTML, and C++ / Symbian OS (native). It features a high-quality color display, and all key telephony and personal information applications, including browsers and messaging clients. The user interface is designed for easy, one-handed operation.
